While you definitely couldn't touch anything, seeing jewels and former living quarters and even corpses draped in gold and elaborate clothing was very normal for tours in the 80s and 90s. I think travel is just super common now and they just trying to push as many people through as fast as possible. That and tourists fuck up everything.

Amusing myself at the thought that the priest wasn’t an officially sanctioned tour guide and was actually trying to make them accomplices in an attempted theft.

I did the "an hour before it officially opens" group tour and it was very chill. You can revisit the rooms after the tour, but the guide said it's better not to spoil the feeling by seeing all the crowds, so I didn't.
