I remember MuchMusic had a 'discovered' type reality show for bands and this Greig guy was featured prominently. There was def. a sense that some of these Cdn rockers could do no wrong at the time and the industry did a lot to cover it all up.
I'm reading his memoir right now and Deryck's very honest about what happened between them, and even takes on far more of the blame than he should. Everything he described is textbook grooming and manipulative sexual abuse. At one point Deryck is even says Grieg could be the nicest, most sensitive guy who could make you feel great about yourself. You can clearly see that he wanted to show the reader what he saw in Grieg.
There's a part where he talks about how Avril's townhouse was two doors down from Grieg's so he would sneak into and out of her house to try to avoid any confrontation or manipulation. Another time he talks about how he got so overwhelmed by the emotional pressure Grieg was putting on him that he smashed a bunch of stuff in the hotel, then ended up just stumbling alongside the road in 3 feet of snow, barely even realizing he'd sliced the palm of his hand. All extremely common reactions to abuse that I just don't believe that someone can fake.
I'm glad he feels supported enough to write and talk about this. I hope it's cathartic for him. I wish there was a way to get that fucker off their song credits--I bet he's still making money off their work.
Oh my god this is horrifying from start to finish. Good on Deryck for acknowledging what happened (for himself) and for not backing down now. There is no way it happened in any different way than how he tells it. I wish him courage, peace, and unconditional support.

Also, he obviously has great taste in wives as both immediately recognized what happened and supported him.
