RIP. Obviously, it was never common to be both a leftist/socialist and a country singer, but it is startling to think of how right wing the genre became in the decades after his rise. His career would've been impossible in mainstream country in the 2000s.

I remember when people in Vienna started yelling 'Sandinista' during a concert of his and he said something along the lines of probably getting killed if he would sing that in the US, but if everyone in the room agreed, he'd play it (which he did).

This was a man who never let anyone sway him from his convictions. Even Johnny Cash mentioned in the foreword to his autobiography how often and how long he tried to convert Kris Kristofferson to his beliefs, with absolutely no success.
