Johnny Marr has been wanting to register The Smiths' name since 2018 so that third parties cannot profit off the band. Morrissey never responded, so Marr registered it himself

Yeah, the claim about us missing out on some supposed amazing greatest hits compilation is like…whatever. There are already so many, and deluxe editions of their releases. It’s not like they had this extensive discography. What’s weird is that ages ago, when there was a Virgin Megastore on Hollywood and Vine, Morrissey would regularly come in and he was so chill, nice, easy to talk to, and super pop culture (well, like in an artsy way) knowledgeable. I’d always wonder where that Moz would go, because otherwise he truly does seem like an awful person.
