Vividly remember watching this performance live on the TV in the bedroom of our new (at the time) house. My husband and I weren't into her yet, and we were both like WTF?! as it went on, but we knew immediately she was gonna be *it*.

I remember the 9-9-99 promos from 1999. I have never got that earworm out of my system. This performance was probably one of the last great VMA performances that I can remember.

I remember thinking it was one of the best VMAs performances in a looooooooooong time cause it had losing popularity by then.

the fame monster was kind of a defining moment in pop music, it was the moment all the pop girlies reformulated themselves to keep up with Gaga's theatrics, and it marked the beginning of a really fun era in pop music that lasted until around 2012.

I think that tour was still the best concert I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a lot

that era of pop was insane, she really had all the girls chasing after whatever she was doing. she had everyone waiting for her next look

It makes me sad that the VMAs went from this to a complete non-event now…

Funny enough by the time this show was airing the show had been losing steam. Gaga was really one of the last few good performances.

I was too young and still in my religious parents’ household for all the most iconic VMAs, like the ones with Britney’s various iconic performances or the one with the Madonna/Britney/Xtina kiss so this one was really the only one I got to experience firsthand. In my mind I remembered a lot more blood lol!

The last VMA that I feel like got talked about offline was Miley and Robin Thicke and that was more than TEN YEARS AGO now wow! I decided to watch one a couple of years ago because I didn’t have anything else to do and I got so bored I just turned it off. Most pop stars these days don’t have an eye to create anything memorable or iconic.

Wait how old are you?

Miley was just embarrassing during that period. Granted I’ll give her credit for managing to rebrand and end up having success from doing less-scandalous activities lol. Sometimes I’m surprised by her success haha.

I got lucky I’ve been watching since 1999!! 1999-2005-ish were peak years cause going into the late 00s/early 10s a loooot of change happened in the industry and aloooota filler came in.
