I don’t like the movie at all. Especially when Vivian told whatshisface that she cried the whole time, when she first slept with a guy for money. He carried on paying her for sex like it was nothing. I don’t see it as a great love story.

Honestly, you aren’t missing much, there are much better romcom movies out there. It just so happened this was one of the first of the 90’s/00’s romcom era.

I feel like I'm picky when it comes to romcoms and this one has never done anything for me. Honestly I prefer Julia in her non romcom roles.

I liked the movie well enough, but I never understood the fanatic appeal it had. I always thought Roberts and Gere had lukewarm chemistry. You knew the movie would end with them happily ever after, but I wasn’t actively rooting for them, if that makes sense.

Yea while I liked the movie at the time I don't know if I saw it as a romance.

Even as I child I knew that happily ever after didn't make sense.

The point of this movie - its appeal and massive success - was 99% about Julia Roberts being charming & charismatic as fuck with big, amazing hair & that smile for 2 hours. That's it. That's why this ridiculous, not very well-reviewed romcom managed to score one Oscar nomination - Julia for Best Actress.

It's probably most interesting as a rare example of a single performance that sends an actor straight to A-list international superstardom. The frenzy this movie kicked off around Julia was crazy.

100%, this film is all about Julia and her gigantic star quality. She's amazing in Mystic Pizza too (as well as Annabeth Gish and Lili Taylor).

Y’all think he was ever resentful of julia’s post pretty woman success? That movie launched her career to a whole other level. She has almost always had top billing since and richard cannot say any of these things.

If he was resentful, he never showed it….and when they did reunite in other movies (Runaway Bride), he always was gracious, kind and treated her like a friend.

Nah, despite Pretty Woman being all about Julia and her charisma, it actually restarted his career too. He couldn't get good parts and after this he got offers again, they seem to like each other.
