Curious to hear if Kneecap is any good.

It's been a very busy movie week for me! Recent watches:

Deadpool and Wolverine: My husband was more excited for this one than I was, but it was fine. Nothing I'll give a lot of thought to, and no desire to see it again, but I enjoyed the cameos, especially [Spoiler (click to open)]Channing Tatum. And I was fooled by the Chris Evans appearance, so that was fun. Overall, though, it felt kind of pointless.

A Quiet Place: Day One: This was good. It's kind of a drama dressed up in action/thriller clothing, which is maybe not what I was expecting, but I wasn't mad at it. Lupita absolutely carried the movie, but the cat was also pulling his weight!!

In Cold Blood (1967): This was part of the Academy Museum's Branch Selects series - every week, a different branch picks a film to showcase. This week, the Music branch picked the film for its score by Quincy Jones, and they had a discussion before the film about Quincy and his work, which was interesting. The film itself was great, if a bit long - pretty faithful to the ( ... )

I distinctly remember watching In Cold Blood the first time and how it wrecked me. It's one of those hard to recover from film experiences, but it's also one of a select group of films that remind me why I fell in love with film and the art of storytelling in the first place. I saw it before reading the book but it compelled me to buy a copy. Now that I'm thinking back on those images and how visceral they were for me at the time, I believe I've stumbled upon the reason why home invasion horror films affect me the most. Anyway, a chilling experience and Robert Blake's performance is unforgettable.

That shot with Perry monologuing in his jail cell and the rain reflecting off his face is an all-timer.

I saw Kneecap not even knowing it was based on a real band and had an absolute blast with it! I'd highly recommend it.

sing sing doesn’t appear to be expanding near me at all, booo. cineplex only seems to have it in toronto and vancouver. coup! could be fun.

i watched young women and the sea, which has every historical sports movie cliché you can think of… yet i still teared up when [Spoiler (click to open)]people lit bonfires all down the coast of dover so she could find the way. i actually really liked it because it was exactly what i expected it to be lol. also it had the tiniest snippet of the last paris olympics.

i’m finally seeing twisters tomorrow after trying to find time for two weeks, can i get a yeehaw

Ok, Oscar pundits of ONTD, hear me out.

Does anyone think Sing Sing given that it's had no marketing is gonna actually get a BP/best actor nom? And released in summer to no fanfare. It just feels like at this point that its just kind of existing. I'm interested in seeing it for sure, but why does everyone have it top of their forecasts right now?

eta Trap has previews starting in just a few hours and the embargo is still up?!

I haven't seen it yet, but this season is gonna be pretty weak, I think, so I am optimistic Colman will stay in the convo. Idk about BP, though.

I think they were trying to release it in the summer to give it breathing room from other Oscar fare in the fall (Past Lives and EEAAO also did this), but it isn't making as big of an impact as they may have hoped. My guess is that they will bring it back in theaters later in the fall to refresh people's memories.

I know it's A24, but it just doesn't feel at all like A24 is giving it anything. I thought for a second it was being released by one of those distributors that just doesn't give a fuck about awards/handles awards seasons badly *cough*Bleeker Street*cough*.

They do love nominating 'new' people two years in a row (not that he's actually new to acting, just in the awards convo), but IA that a small summer release is usually not a good sign. I would love it, tho!

lmao shit, that's a bad sign about Trap, but I'll be there at 6pm anyway. 🤓

Seeing Trap tonight and Kneecap on Sat. Anything I can do to stick it to the British. 👍 I can't believe how little press Coup! is getting -- like even I never heard of it until earlier this week when I was browsing the AMC website, but it does sound like my kinda thing, as does the Liz Taylor doc. My Friday night plans got canceled thanks to the heat, so maybe I'll check it out.

Saw Sing Sing last week and I loved it, though honestly [Spoiler (click to open)]I feel like Divine G's history should've been a little more ambiguous? I know it's a true story, but I almost felt like we shouldn't know for sure whether he was guilty or innocent, as the story's not about 'good' and 'bad' people, it's about people with flaws trying to repair their lives and find humanity through art. We shouldn't root for him because he's actually innocent, we should root for him because he's clearly trying to put good in the world. If that makes sense. But it was still great!

I feel like Harold is going to flop thanks to lack of press/buzz. If we have to put up with more of Zachary ( ... )
