I'd agree except that the Washington Post reported this about 10 days ago and every rich federation is going to bring their AC including hot countries like Italy and Greece.

Umm, if it's gonna be too hot then yeah, they shouldn't have to be miserable and sweaty just because. As someone that lives in a hot hot region, it can get really miserable and even down right depressing.
Hopefully whatever they bring is energy efficient.

to be clear, doing something for climate change / reduce emissions is not "just because"

It is "just because", because 1. France mostly uses nuclear power 2. Why invite people to come over and compete in highly stressful environment and then have them be suffering in the heat, they could try to cut emissions elsewhere, make use of electric mass transport, reduction in plastic usage, etc.

I doubt either of us are informed enough to speak about the increase of emissions that have actually been modeled because this olympic village having / not having AC. People whose job it was made an informed decision, and unless you have actual specific facts to speak against it, then you should trust that decision makers were coming from an informed place. What would be an amount of carbon saved that would make it worth it? How will the villages be used in the future, and what would be the increased amount of carbon associated with the changes in construction that putting it in would involve? Do you actually know they aren't using electric mass transit or no single use items?

I stand by my point that it's not "just because", and unless you actually are deeply familiar with this site, I don't think it's right to just handwave away environmental benefit. People constantly dismiss environmental impact for convenience, that's how we got here.

Western Europe is going to have to get over its irrational fear of AC eventually, or thousands are gonna keep dying every time there's a "heat wave."

eh, installing an AC unit is pretty expensive (over 1000eur for sure) and I know that in some old buildings you can't install it at all (I worked with a woman who couldn't install it because she lived in a building that was protected).

Having said that, if people are even refusing to buy a fan than they are just being dumb at this point.

Do y'all not have portables or window units?? Or would you need to make changes to the circuits to support the power use?

Window units are not a thing here.
Afaik you can either get a portable one, or get a mini split unit installed, which is the one I have. You basically have an internal unit (aka the fan where the air comes out) which is connected to an external unit positioned outside, so installing requires drilling through at least one very wide wall (and it is usually done by professionals, I have never heard of anyone DIYing an AC install).

this kind of shit cracks me up

i live in the US but in a place where 99% of the house and lodges don't have a/c because we're at 9000ft+ elevation in one of the consistently coldest places in the country, theres only one or two weeks out of the year where it might actually be wanted, and i have heard so many stories from my friends who work in hospitality about people freaking the absolute fuck out when they find out theres no a/c it's wild

I can't blame them, being hot is miserable. My mom's husband is stingy with the AC, it was 79 degrees inside the house this morning when I got up at 6am.

This is the number one point on my compatibility list: How they handle the thermostat.

More important than religion or politics.

I cannot sleep if it is that hot. Even with a fan (or 12).

That isn't even factoring humidity. Which is fucking worse than the heat alone.

Last week is was in the mid-high 90s here. With the humidity it was well over 100.

I'm in Canada and I laugh when people think it is cold everywhere here. Like, nope! We get temperatures here that rival tropical places near the damn equator. 🥵 😢
