there is just simply too many things to watch now on so many different platforms. i miss the community of event films and tv shows, when there were things you /had/ to watch, now we have like 2 of them a year. streaming rly did kill it.

i feel like an old man yelling a cloud but i've noticed the almost universal decline in quality of how everything is made just in the last 15 or so years. I watched the new matrix film last night and was shocked at how it was the same director, cast etc. as the first but looked like a netflix tv show when it had over double the budget. i'd rather have a handful of really great stuff that takes its time and has full resources rather than this onslaught of adequate viewing.

It's not even just TV and movies competing with each other anymore either, they have things like video games (both mobile and non-mobile) and stuff like Youtube. Nielsen releases a pie chart of what streaming services are the most popular and the free version of Youtube runs circles around all the other streamers and people get that for free. There really are very few things that are "cultural touchstones" like there used to be because it's simply impossible to make happen when everyone's attention is so split. And even when things do manage to gain a lot of attention usually the investment or discussion around it lasts for such a short time.

There are now very few shows people watch weekly and discuss. I remember not wanting to watch stuff too much behind because I wanted to be able to discuss the most recent episode/speculate. Other than House of the Dragon, which starts up next week, I'm not sure there's any current shows where people discuss it after.

Movies are the same - Barbie was really the only one in recent memory.

That film was often paired with Barbie

The latest episode of The Town shows how movies get green lit; They have algorithms (of COURSE) where you put in names, concepts, ideas, and it gives a numerical rating based upon past box office data and actors. Then the decision is made by useless suits people. Those algorithms aren't really pushing for prestige.

The actor with the highest impact, positive, is Denzel Washington. It's really interesting actually, I'll make a post later.

On the subject, I have no patience for Prestige TV. Too long. Give me a movie, tell me the story in two hours and we can move on.

The real problem with an algorithm is that it can never predict the next big thing, and people tend to suddenly shift to something new when the same formula gets tired.

I thought that The rock was the most positive or was that the most paid?
Did he get dethroned

I think they're just too afraid to take a risk now so they rely a lot on adapting books or making prequels or sequels to existing things (Planet of the Apes or the new Alien movie coming out for example).

I think they used to be a bit more willing to take chances and some movies didn't do well, but others did a lot better than expected. For example- Star Wars was not expected to be such a hit, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Jaws, Twister, Home Alone

God i wish we could have a repeat of the 70's where studios we're failing big time so they took chances with young directors and that's how we got great new ideas

You used to be able to put some explosions in the trailer and a couple of good jokes and people were thereIt seems like studios are still trying to push this practice on viewers. The fall guy is a recent example. I HATED that movie with passion. It feels like the script is the last thing they look into. Also, i'm tired of seeing the same faces everywhere. A-list actors were in cinema first, and when tv series gained momentum, they jumped on the bandwagon. While I have no problem seeing tv actors transition onto the big screen, i don't want to see established actors on my tv show. Big little lies with Meryl Streep was terrible, i'm already exhausted by the new season of only murders in the building, and it hasn't even started yet. When the budget is going to big names, the script is lacking. And i'm not drawn to the screen by actors, i want to see stories. That's why i'm here. Give me that. If i wanted to see a famous face, i'd go to google images ( ... )

Not to mention A-list actors now appearing in commercials more
Like so many modern day actors got their start in commercials from Mark Ruffalo to Michael J Fox
This needs to stop
we need more unknowns

and it's not like there's nowhere to choose from, there's tons of young, fresh talent
the same story happened with recent knives out casting and i'm still mad about it

Yeah Fall Guy felt like the most generic mush in the world. No soul.
