  • Momsen was playing in Sevilla when a small bat attached itself to the lace on her slip dress
  • The crowd kept warning her but she didn't understand for awhile
  • An enterprising stage hand shook the dress to get it off
  • The bat is okay but unfortunately Momsen was bitten and will have to get the rabies vaccine

i got bit by a mouse once and was SURE i was going to get rabies

turns out getting rabies from a mouse is basically unheard of. mice are small, if they get bit by a rabid animal they're also probably going to be dead after the bite.

What, are you serious? I thought mice could get rabies!

Any mammal CAN get rabies but mice are so small that they usually just die when attacked by rabid animals, so they're not a concern as a rabies vector. And honestly we should all be glad of that because otherwise rabies would be so much more of a concern.

(This does lead me to wondering why bats DO sometimes have the disease, since they're also small but I can't find a clear answer on google...)

Omg, that's awful, but also very funny? Like I could see not noticing a bee, or a fly, or a mosquito, but a fucking BAT?? lol. Glad everyone is okay, and happy that the rabies vaccine exists!

Apparently it’s very easy not to notice a bat bite. If you find a bat in your house and you’ve been sleeping, it’s recommended that you get a rabies shot because you can be bitten in your sleep and not feel it.

Hard to guess the species from the clip, but these bats are incredibly lightweight! A small bat like this, like a pipistrelle or lesser horseshoe weighs around 5-10 grams, even a great horseshoe bat would only be 20~30 grams. I would've probably only wondered why something soft & fluffy was brushing against my leg xD As for the bite, I assume it bit her when they were trying to get it off, and these small insect-eating bats usually don't leave a deep, bleeding bite or anything quite noticeable or painful as their jaws & teeth are not designed to chomp on mammals. It's not comparable to a rodent bite from a similarly sized mouse, which you would definitely feel. (But of course, with virus or bacteria transmissions, even a small break in the skin can be enough to get infected. So even without getting anywhere near a snout, always thoroughly wash your hands after touching wildlife!)

I would've lost my shit. I agree with the man who praised her, she handled it like a pro.

Once, a bat came into the cabin we were staying at and we all freaked out and locked ourselves in a room waiting for the animal control people to arrive and take him.

They told us it was the right thing to do because a bat who goes willinglly close to humans alone, may be disoriented and it may be sick.
