Eurovision 2024: A Drama-Palooza

May 11, 2024 07:26

Eurovision, the yearly song competition between (mostly) European Countries is having a time right now. Most of the drama so far is surrounding Dutch entrant Joost Klein:

UPDATE: RTL news (a legit Dutch media network) has just announced Joost has been disqualified and will not be participating in the Finale tonight. Wow.

Is it better now? I've tried to find a video from a re-uploader instead of from the official Eurovision yt channel.

I'm in the NL so Eurovision vids from the offish acct seem to be geoblocked. Thanks so much for letting me know.

I'm not watching this year. I have seen bits of news scrolling through twitter. I usually watch with my mom and it's a fun time, but I can't do it this year.

Israel received 39% of all televotes

From Italy, and even then RAI stated that the leak did not feature actual percentages. Idk if that is true or damage control, but that's what was said.

they said the numbers were "incomplete" iirc. like maybe they included phone votes but not sms votes or something like that.

if it came out that Isreal was manipulating the votes or paying bots/people to vote for them it wouldn't surprise me - they are so obsessed with shoving themselves down everyones throats and being seen as a beloved little victim! I can only imagine they were fully expecting the response kalush orchestra got, a landslide win

I've been following this on the subreddit since yesterday morning and it's frankly insane how nothing has been confirmed and the EBU is radio silent. This year was a shitshow from the start but there's a lot going on, and it's not even just Joost. I may have gotten some of this wrong, so feel free to correct me but here's some stuff I've heard ( ... )

Marina yawning during genocide Barbie's interview was most definitely on purpose and she was posting the 🍉 emoji afterwards (she has also posted pro-Palestine things before). but the greek state broadcaster has clearly intervened to shut her up and Israel supporting right-wing trolls here are trying to raise a fuss bc she's there on state money. and that Israeli journalist harassing Joost also posted a photo yawning camped outside her dressing room

Every year I tell myself I'm not going to watch this nonsense. But, the drama is pulling me back in like when that Maneskin guy was caught snorting *ahem*. This show is either just bad or a dumpster fire. No in between.

I do know what you're trying to say but this year, this "drama" is because a country committing genocide is being treated like a baby, and representatives of actual European countries are being harassed, doxxed, intimidated, being called antisemitic for wanting peace. it's not exactly like previous years' drama

"Are you watching this years Eurovision?"

Well, I came into this week as a huge fan and I watched the first semifinal and then I slowly but surely broke free of my emotional ties to it in favor of a boycott the rest of the week.

That said, I've been looking at Twitter/X a lot for updates on this Joost story in progress. The voting was supposed to be open already for the Rest of the World vote (esc.vote) but it's still listed as delayed. So I've been checking that, not to vote but to see if a decision has been made yet about Joost in the final.
