I heard negative things about Cabaret-has anyone seen it? I love that movie so it’s a bummer if the revival was bad (not that I can get to NYC to see anything lol. But rooting for DanRad for Merrily anyway!)

I'm surprised the revival had negative/mixed reviews. Especially considering the west end run had great reviews and this is a pretty faithful adaptation of the west end production. I have tickets to the show in late may but I've also never seen the source material other than knowing a couple of songs from pop culture. The main critique seems to be that this adaptation doesn't bring anything new/better than previous adaptations so I'm hoping I actually enjoy it!

I think the difference in reactions basically comes down to 1) the UK and the US have different tastes in musicals, with the UK audience leaning towards spectacles while the US audience prefers storytelling and 2) the UK never got the Mendes/Marshall/Cumming revival

I also found it hilarious/ironic that she was nominated for a Tony the same year that The Notebook musical finally made it to Broadway!

I'm shocked that spamalot didn't get nommed for revival, especially since by all accounts it got better reviews than cabaret did - so I'm chalking that up being strictly due to poor box office performance.

I enjoyed Spamalot when I saw it in DC, but it is a clone of the original Broadway production. The updated some of the jokes, but for the most part, it's the same as the original, so I can totally understand why it didn't get a nomination.

The Outsiders is a musical?

Let me look that up.

Oh, The Wiz was eligible but didn't get any nods? Damn, I would love for Amber Ruffin to win a Tony.

Revivals aren’t eligible for best book. Even if they were, I don’t think she would have qualified since her official credit was “additional material.”
