I heard negative things about Cabaret-has anyone seen it? I love that movie so it’s a bummer if the revival was bad (not that I can get to NYC to see anything lol. But rooting for DanRad for Merrily anyway!)

I'm surprised the revival had negative/mixed reviews. Especially considering the west end run had great reviews and this is a pretty faithful adaptation of the west end production. I have tickets to the show in late may but I've also never seen the source material other than knowing a couple of songs from pop culture. The main critique seems to be that this adaptation doesn't bring anything new/better than previous adaptations so I'm hoping I actually enjoy it!

I think the difference in reactions basically comes down to 1) the UK and the US have different tastes in musicals, with the UK audience leaning towards spectacles while the US audience prefers storytelling and 2) the UK never got the Mendes/Marshall/Cumming revival

I’ve seen the West End production but not the Broadway one. It’s fine, I didn't hate it as much as the critics but it left me a lot colder than I was expecting, especially after all the hype. It was a little too much style over substance for me, which really muddled the themes of the show IMO. I do think those who are less familiar with Cabaret or never seen it stage will enjoy it better though.

Just FYI the movie is very different from the stage show, almost to the point of being divorced from each other, I love both and they each have their own strengths but just wanted to warn you in case you ever saw it live.

thank you for your thoughts! I didn't realize the show was really different from the movie. I actually saw it ages ago when I was a kid at a university student production but I have ZERO memory of it and only know the movie lol.

I just got back from seeing it & I really liked it - there were a couple of odd choices, and I think the theatre in the round did detract from what was happening with the main cast, but Gayle Rankin was incredible.
