i said in an earlier post this should've been more fleshed out into a miniseries, not just a movie. there's a lot of potential there. and i found the young actress and her acting to be grating as fuck, i loathe those kinds of characters who never fucking listen and are in EVERYONE's way, ugh

I agree. It would've made for an even better mini-series.

I normally like Cailee so I think it was the writing, but generally agreed. I still audibly said “no” at the end even if in retrospect it was a predictable ending.

I keep hearing people flat out love it or people wish it had actually said anything instead of straddling the line, BUT I have not seen it yet and can't have an opinion about it. It does seem interesting.

"people wish it had actually said anything instead of straddling the line"

I can believe this one cause that's a common criticism of Alex Garland. He likes holding back a lot for the sake of leaving it up to interpretation and discussion. It's annoying to me cause I don't always think it works.

To be honest, I think it was actually a very political film just not in the way people expected it to be. And I liked it more for that reason. I don’t think it was a perfect movie but it was very poignant especially considering the war in Gaza.

Which, if it was political in the way people expected it then it would’ve been criticized for that as well. If this was set in a different country I think people would respond differently on the politics front. But generally, I think it is something that will hold up well.

Yes, when I first saw the trailer I thought it was a family trying to travel during a Civil War, but the use of impartial journalists as the leads was perfect because I think people have forgotten what that looks like in some instances, and there's enough going on in the US right now that there was no reason for it to take a stand. Although it does, I agree.

Nothing about this seems interesting to me, I'm kind of surprised it's doing so well/getting great reeviews.

watching the trailer, first thing I thought was that it would inspire those MAGA Capitol numbnuts to riot harder and go to civil war territory... I Mean it feels as disturbing as Black MIrror and the potential we are heading there

I also worry it could be inspirational to magas, but I'm not planning to see it so I don't know.

I'm not sure a MAGA would see it and because the main characters are journalists they would most likely be turned right off. And the MAGAs are currently being inspired and ginned up every day by ultra right wing media telling them that everyone who is not them is coming for them and their children and want to kill them, so they need to prepare. They are already being led well down the path just like in 2020.

The film also leaves the specific origins of the war vague enough that it's hard to see anything but tragedy.

just got home from seeing it and thought it was good tho underbaked bc it’s a less than two hour film. would love to see it turned into a limited series a la the purge films bc there’s def a lot interesting ideas to dig into with it and the film touches so little on most of them.
