2x5: The Secret Inner Lives of Swans In November 1975, the day after the Esquire article is published, Truman receives an inspiring visit from a fellow writer.
I was expecting this show to be very white so I was excited when I saw his name in the cast list a few months ago. But then I totally forgot he was going to be on the show, so when he showed up this week, I clapped my hands with excitement!
To be honest, I didn’t really need a whole episode of Truman feeling sorry for himself/getting a pep talk, buuuuut that was countered by having Chris Chalk be a main character for the entire episode.
I'm not going to read through this or the New Look post to avoid spoilers but are folks generally liking this? Is it worth giving it a watch? I love all the actresses in it, hate everything Ryan Murphy has ever touched (though I know he's just EP on this).
I like it a lot but I'm familiar with the source material, and as long as you accept that parts of it are fictitious it's good stuff. Your mileage may vary, however.
Chris Chalk as James Baldwin was inspired casting. I enjoyed the FUCK out of this episode, especially when he was having his "Come to Jesus" moments with Capote. Even though it never happened (Murphy put it in as a dream sequence) I enjoy everything about James and at least Ryan didn't blight him like he did poor Happy Rocketfeller. :(
Also, damn at Capote telling all the Swan's dirty laundry to James and eating roasted swan at the end. It's gonna be on next week!
I totally agree. Reading about their lives before La Cote Basque was published was much more interesting. All we've really seen of them on this show is complaining about Truman or their husbands, which is boring. I think part of their error in judgment with this season was the structure. They should have dedicated a full episode to each swan's story and then shown the fallout from the publication of the story. Instead, they put the story reveal in the first episode so it lacked any punch because we weren't invested in their friendships with him.

Am I the only one feeling like they're focusing too much on Truman and not the swans? Like, I'm here for the women
