I watched his SAG interview and he was very honest about his connections (and luck) helping him get the role. He heard about the role and made an audition tape. He has been friends with Sarah Paulson forever, who is friends with Amanda Peet, who is married to one of the creators, can't remember which one. So he asked her to put in a good word for him.
And Sarah made sure the guy watched the tape, which eventually got him cast.

I remember Bryan Cranston saying no matter how talented you are, if you're not somewhat lucky, you can't make it in the industry. I'm glad Pedro was lucky enough to get a break. More people should own it instead of using the "I worked really hard to get here, no one did it for me" line. Specially nepo babies.

Yeah I saw the interview on Howard Stern where he said that a lot of actors fail to grasp or embrace that to have success in the industry is that you need luck.

He mentioned how landing an episode of The X-files was his lucky break cause the episode Vince Gilligan and so he would later remember Bryan for Walter White

the reality is, everyone is lucky in the entertainment industry, for better or worse.

A classically trained actor who technically has the best skill and range can be overlooked by the hot new thing that just stepped onto the scene.

Oh, you can hold a note and belt out that song? That's cool, but so can thousands of other people. What's gonna set you apart from the rest? Seizing a moment and building on momentum.

There's also no rhyme or reason why a social media personality gains enough traction to get big, while others barely get any views.

It really is all about luck, timing, and algorithms.

I like that he's honest about having a friend and helping someone else practice for a role he eventually auditioned for and got because he had a connection. It still means it's about who you know and not your talent, but at least he has the talent to back it up and is honest about how it happened.

You get the best jobs if you have connections at the company already. This is true across every industry.

in a lot of ways, i get it.
I imagine its sort of like when artists are holding auditions for backup dancers.

If they've made it to the point of dancing in front of the artist, they've prolly good enough, but at some point you just gotta pick X amount and move on.

Yep. Chris Rock said it best during one of his standups. “The truth is, you can be anything you’re good at. If they’re hiring. And even then, it helps if you know someone.”

I hated him in the role tbh. He was overrated since then. Although the writers mishandled all the Dornish characters.

💯 Everything about the show's treatment of the Martells and Dorne rankles: from the casting (with the exception of Alexander Siddig and Indira Varma), to the awful storylines and dialogue, and let's not forget the erasure of Arianne's pov altogether.

I liked him in the Oberyn role.

But I also hated how the writers handled the Martells' story line. I hated it even more after I read the books and they omitted Arianne and Quentyn and the rest of the sand snakes.

I always fancast Oberyn with a MENA or South Asian actor like Silas Carson, so I was disappointed from the get-go. And when I watched I felt that Pedro's Oberyn came across as a louche caricature and not the charismatic, deadly Red Viper I loved in the books.

I was just expecting so much more, but GOT dropped the ball when it came to Dorne and the Martells (even when they got casting right, like Alexander Siddig as Doran and Indira Varma as Ellaria, they butchered their characters).
