The 2024 Met Gala dress code is “The Garden of Time”. As always, the theme is related to this year’s exhibition concept "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”.

The event will happen on Monday 6 May and the Met Gala co-chairs will be Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya and Vogue’s Anna Wintour.

idt it's about that, it's more about pieces in the collection that have just aged out of being usable. textiles don't age well, and museum collections are full of weighted silk dresses from the turn of the century that turn into literal confetti as you move them, or evening gowns whose metal thread embroideries and glass beads are pulling the entire thing apart. i once handled a lovely rococo gown that was just shedding tiny squares of silk if you looked at it wrong.

it's not about fast fashion, but about the fact that clothing, as a group of objects that have a specific materiality and condition of use, is doomed to be ephemeral, even if it's well-made and durable. textiles are one of the trickiest materials to conserve, and this is one reason.
