Feb 15, 2024 17:37

The 2024 Met Gala dress code is “The Garden of Time”. As always, the theme is related to this year’s exhibition concept "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”.

fashion so fragile that it can’t ever be worn again

idk if we should be celebrating unsustainable clothing design??

Someone is def going to show up in a balloon flower dress that will pop and deflate over the night.

idt it's about that, it's more about pieces in the collection that have just aged out of being usable. textiles don't age well, and museum collections are full of weighted silk dresses from the turn of the century that turn into literal confetti as you move them, or evening gowns whose metal thread embroideries and glass beads are pulling the entire thing apart. i once handled a lovely rococo gown that was just shedding tiny squares of silk if you looked at it wrong.

it's not about fast fashion, but about the fact that clothing, as a group of objects that have a specific materiality and condition of use, is doomed to be ephemeral, even if it's well-made and durable. textiles are one of the trickiest materials to conserve, and this is one reason.

aw thank you <3 i love textiles so much, so i'm always happy to have an opportunity to ramble a bit haha. (and it's nice to feel like someone recognises/remembers me across posts lmao)

i've thought abt making a few ontd originals at some point abt textile history related stuff maybe, if i ever find the time for it.

Please do if you'd like to! Honestly it never really occured to me that most clothing and textiles aren't something that lasts.
