OP, Lily Gladstone was snubbed at the BAFTA's unfortunately.

I still think she's going to take SAG and then the Oscar, but she has stiff competition from Stone.

I hate getting my hopes up, but I really hope you're right. That BAFTA snub though.....eeesh. Idk what that means, if anything, in terms of how she's perceived with the euro voting block. I just hope the KOTFM team keep campaigning on her behalf (I'm looking at you Leo).

Yeah, maybe they didn't care that she's Native American because it's not an aspect they deal with or care about? idk idk i'm still trying to make sense of it in my head. It killed off some of her momentum for sure and I'm still pissed.

Lily Gladstone has already made history by becoming the first Native American nominee ever, in the Lead Actress category (how depressing is that?).#

Wasn't Yalitza Aparico the first? Unless you mean with American US-American?

Lily Gladstone... is also nominated for Best Actress at the BAFTA's

No, she isn't.

Alexander Payne is not the favorite for Adapted Screenplay. It's Triet who got a Best Director nom over Payne and who they can't reward in Best International Film. Triet also got a Best Director nomination at the BAFTAs and in light of the Oscar nominations, people think she might have the number 2 vote getter after Nolan. (three directors at the BAFTA's are jury picks and with Payne and Cooper missing at the Oscars, chances of them being number two in Britain and then not getting into a top five in America would be weird. Glazer's film didn't make Best Film which would be weird for the number 2.) So there is passion for Triet in Directing. But director has already engraved Nolan's name on that statue so that passion might ( ... )

I think "first" is referring to Northern Native American but I'm pretty sure I just read a statement from Lily saying she isn't the first regardless, that the young actress in Whale Riders was.

She actually is the first Native American nominee if we're using modern borders. Chief Dan George was nominated in 1970, but he is First Nation Canadian, and Yalitza Aparicio was nominated in 2018, but she is indigenous Mexican.

I think you might be confused re Whale Rider, as Keisha Castle-Hughes is Maori (New Zealand).

ooooh got it, i see. yeah, i saw this pull quote of something she said and got confused by her referring to Keisha as the "first indigenous actress" - https://www.instagram.com/p/C2e0xczrt9C/

prediction #1 I hope I'm wrong, but I could see Barbie picking up a sympathy best screen play award. The script is weak. It does not even deserve a nomination imo

prediction #2 We are going to suffer thru some of the worst jokes about the Barbie drama which will overshadow the rest of the nominees.

I think Barbie deserves costume/production, I don't understand how it wasn't nominated for makeup and hair ??! Baffling..

I watched The Holdovers again, and while it's a lovely, well directed, well acted and well written film, I feel I'm taking crazy pills seeing it at the top of certain categories.

Frontrunner for original screenplay? It's a good film but also a film we've seen time and time again, and Alexander Payne did nothing really knew here. Unlike AOAF and Past Lives, that had refreshingly original takes on their respective genres.

And while I love Paul as an actor, Cillian's work was superior here.

Yeah I overall enjoyed The Holdovers but there were several scenes that even watching it in the theater I thought "this is a scene that could have been trimmed." Like it easily could have been a 90 minute film and probably would have been a lot better for it.

i really like the holdovers and hope da'vine wins, but i definitely think that it's not quite as strong as it's seen by the industry. people are just really nostalgic for that type of throwback dramedy movie and i get it lol but craft and writing wise it's not accomplished as most of its peers.
