The early seasons were SO SO good and had a good balance of actual criticisms to help the dancer improve and praise at the good dances. Now they don't even tell dancers to stop pulling faces when they dance and it's always incredibly distracting.

The Ramalama Bang Bang zombie dance in season 2 is perfection. Also absolutely loved the Lauren & Neil devil dance on those stairs.
I also would get irrationally mad when a judge in later seasons would say some sub-bar dance was the best dance they've ever seen on the show. You're lying. It's incredibly hard to top the park bench dance, the bed dance, and even the addiction dance. Hell, the father/daughter one with Neil and Lacey that basically made everybody sob because it was about losing a father. There's also the statue dance with Melanie and Marko that was just gorgeous.
I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT THE OLD SEASONS.

i probably posted this here before but this dance with kayla and kupono fucking devastated me and sent me to therapy. i've lost several people i loved to heroin addiction and have watched others struggle with it for decades (and now i'm just waiting to hear they've lost the fight), and this was so unbelievably painful and cathartic and heart destroying to watch. i still cry.
(also fuck you youtube for deleting all my carefully edited sytycd clips that i risked life and limb and fbi jail to torrent and make, you motherfuckers)
longer version with mia michaels explaining the choreo and the meaning and kupono breaking my heart

And they need to return to their older format where we saw everyone dance together, proper group routines and show us their personal styles more often.
