my record arrived yesterday and i spun it last night. had been so long since i listened to that album. yes she's cringe and the whole vibe and aesthetic were truly insane but idk... i kind of love it lol.
i don’t like her either lol but personally my problem with her music is that for someone who wants to sell herself as this huge badass who’s breaking boundaries the contents of her music tend to feel bland and safe, like where’s this alleged danger destiny???
"When people go to iTunes and listen to my old music, it's so irritating to me because I can't just erase that stuff and start over,"
I feel like that's the issue with most artists who start young (except someone like Fiona Apple who was fucking flawless from the start). I'd probably hate having my teenage/early 20s crap eternalized in public, popular art lol
i'd actually be curious how fiona feels about tidal now. i was shocked to read that sinead o'connor thought a lot of the music on her first album was embarrassing bc she wrote it so young, whereas for me as a listener i marvel at her songwriting ability at that age.
off topic but i've been trying to get "tidal" on vinyl for the better part of 10 years. no lie. i love all of fiona's albums, but "tidal" is especially meaningful since i was a teenager when it came out, and it was essentially the soundtrack to my youth. but it's also notoriously difficult to get on vinyl unless you're willing to shill lots of $$$ because it's been out of press for a long time.
a few weeks ago they randomly announce a repress - i finally snag a copy (!!), and it arrives TODAY which also happens to be my birthday (!!!). do you even know how excited i am???
also yes i wonder what fiona thinks of "tidal" now? it's a flawless record but would be curious...
it's incredible how much people will pay for certain vinyl. i definitely took advantage of that a bit during the pandemic while i was out of work, and regret it every now and then. i actually ordered a repress of lana's ultraviolence a few months back and finally received notice it's shipping, so i'm excited.
