Today marks a decade since Miley Cyrus gave her music career a hard reset with Bangerz, an album that
found Hannah Montana dead and divided both critics and the general public.
Though officially her fourth studio album-arriving three years after the defiant Can't Be Tamed-Cyrus characterized Bangerz as her official debut. "When people go to iTunes and listen to my old music, it's so irritating to me because I can't just erase that stuff and start over," she told Billboard. "I want to start as a new artist."
Cyrus' first album under RCA, who she signed with upon fulfilling her contract with Hollywood Records, Bangerz saw the 21 year old joining forces with trap innovator Mike WiLL Made-It to create a collection of pop-R&B tracks with hip hop and country influences and guest appearances by the likes of Britney Spears and Future.
Despite debuting atop the Billboard 200 and spawning two of Cyrus' biggest Hot 100 hits ("We Can't Stop" peaked at No. 2, while "Wrecking Ball" spent two weeks at No. 1 before returning to the top spot nine weeks later), both the Bangerz album and era divided audiences, with many criticizing the former Disney queen's appropriation of Black culture and highly sexualized antics that began at that August's MTV Video Music Awards.
