Amy Pascal on workers for ‘ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE’ who felt demoralized about revising final renders 5 times - “If the story isn’t right, you have to keep going until it is.”

“I guess, Welcome to making a movie.”

It’s amazing that she’s still…herself…after everything we’ve found out about her. Still pugnacious, still unapologetic until she’s asking “are u mad at me.” I stan tbh.

Lolol oops I submitted this too.

I wonder how long they'll be able to keep their positions if they keep working this way? They got fired for Solo for similar fuckups

You were the second out of three.

I think there are key differences between this and Solo. one of them being Amy Pascal and Kathleen Kennedy just being totally different types of producers lol, but the other just coming from the fact that the first Spiderverse movie was a critical and commercial hit and also won the Oscar, while Solo was part of their “one Star Wars movies every year” thing.

I don’t know. I think they’re actually going to be able to get away with more on the third one because the second one was as big as the first one, but if the third one is bad then the check will bounce again.

I was shocked to learn that the animation world is completely shut off from the rest of Hollywood and isnt part of any guilds or anything.

There's the Animation Guild, which only represents animation workers in Los Angeles as its a local union. Only a few studios outside of LA have voted to unionize and the pay/residuals/deal TAG has is significantly worse than its counterparts in the same IATSE union for the same kinds of roles. WGA's writers fee is like 400% more than the minimum for animation writers, for instance. It's pretty fucked up tbh.

Idk the full details but this is a bit meh. This tea just reads like a glassdoor review by disgruntled employees. I mean, were the folks working more than 8hr shifts paid/paid overtime? If yes, then I'm not sure what the problem is. Many industries and people work more than 8hr shifts. As long as they're getting paid, long working hours do not automatically mean "poor working conditions". Also, I'm not in the industry, but is it normal to have a staff of 100 people and expect all of their designs and work to make it?

I don't think there is any valid reason for anyone to work eleven hours a day, paid or not. That's half your day, sleep takes 7-8 hours of the rest if you're lucky. That gives you zero work/life balance.

Yeah if one of my jobs made me work 11 hour shifts 7 days a week I'd be out....even with overtime. Fuck that.

1000%, there isn't enough money in the world you could offer me to work that much. It is very "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" America tho.

well yeah, with how much it was pushed back and how insane it all was it’s not surprising that something like this was happening behind the scenes. not surprising but very disappointing to have it confirmed.

are animators in a union? we keep hearing all these stories about animators and VFX artists in these horrific work conditions, and I know Marvel Studios specifically has been trying to bust any sort of organizing among their VFX artists, and it’s just awful. I want better for these artists, and like. it’s okay if we have to wait for this movie if it means that people are like. able to take care of themselves, not work horrendously long hours a day under immense pressure and get fairly compensated. it’s not impossible.

Yes, but the Animation Guild isn't nearly as strong of a union as SAG/WGA/DGA etc.

that’s so crazy, especially because animated films and shows are usually reliable hits. like animation films and horror movies are the two sure things right now. if they’re amazing or even just good, they will make money

Animation actually did take a hit in the pandemic. Pixar is the most clear example. There’s been a few break outs (mostly Illumination) but also a lot of films that just underperformed. Encanto didn’t do well in theatrical, it made its mark in streaming. Strange World bombed.

The family film market is one that has taken longer to come back.
