I was devastated at the time. I remember wearing my Buffy shirt to school that day. Looking back, the last season was (IMO) absolutely awful and it should have ended with season 5.
The last season is just so bad compared to the others (even season six which I know is polarizing.) The plotting is just terrible and they bend and twist established characters to fit their story. But I mostly like Chosen. I want Buffy to get a happy ending where she gets to go out into the world and live.
same. i can never agree with people who wanted the show to end in season 5. season 5 was definitely a better season overall, but personally I think it would be such an unsatisfying ending for Buffy to just sacrifice herself and die when so much of her character was about wishing she could live. "you're just a girl" "that's what i keep saying" 🥺
As depressing as it is, S6 gave us some great episodes about depression and adulthood so I can't fault it for that. But gdi, it made me hate everyone in her life including Giles, and I don't want to hate Giles. I've said it before but they could've resolved ASH's departure so much better if they had Giles fly off to the Watcher's Council to defend Faith and be the Watcher she never had; she was dealt with such a bad hand and never stood a chance. It would then make sense why Buffy never called him for help; she didn't want him to worry because she didn't want the Counsel to deem Faith a lost cause and kill her to activate the next Slayer.
S7 was so bad I've only ever watched the entire thing through twice. Caleb was such a boring Big Bad for the final season and the sets look so fake and vacant compared to S1-S3. I'm fine with the show's (2 part?) finale but otherwise, I don't think there was any other episode worth rewatching in S7.
Buffy is a show that aged very well in places and very poorly in others. I used to say it’s my favourite show, but I no longer view it the way I did when I was a teen.
same. i tried rewatching and actually really loved the first two seasons on rewatch but i don't want to think about the conflicting bs in the next few seasons so just gonna think of it fondly from recollection
I always loved the earlier seasons more than the later ones. I think they had that perfect combination of fun and drama that to me was the essence of Buffy. I appreciate them wanting to tackle more serious issues later on but it just didn't work for me, the later seasons still have funny moments but the overall vibe is so depressing to me.
I remember my best friend wanting to watch it together and I told her no. It was the last one and I couldn't chit chat--I needed to ugly cry in my own bedroom.
I remain baffled that fans liked this as a series finale. It was a bunch of contrived last-minute bullshit, nothing was explained, and it basically contradicted the whole fucking season (how the hell were there still girls all over the world being chosen? weren't they being wiped out all season?!)
Plus, in an episode that pays a lot of fake-ass lip service to women's agency, here's Buffy making the choice to activate every Slayer without asking their permission, once again being a massive hypocrite considering how often she complained about never having a choice in being called.
And what kills me all these years about this is that Faith gave her an out. Faith didn't want to be a slayer, she wanted to be THE Slayer. Buffy could've kept in shape and acted as backup when things get dicey. She could've had as close to a normal high school/college/adulthood as she wanted.
