I'm shocked at the size of USA houses. The ceilings all seem very high too? So maybe that's where the 'can barely stand up straight' nonsense is coming from?

I didn't think that freestanding closets were the height of poverty though lol. Guess I'm getting ripped off!

Same, a lot of US shows with characters who are supposed to be in poverty still have really nice houses too I’ve noticed, like Walt from Breaking Bad with having a freaking swimming pool in the back when he’s supposedly dealing with having failed in life, or even something like Roseanne where they were living in a pretty big house with the children having their own bathrooms. Whereas in the U.K. you just wouldn’t be able to purchase a detached house like that, let along a garden big enough for a swimming pool, unless you were doing very nicely. Many people are fighting to even find somewhere to park their cars as a lot of our houses don’t have driveways either

It’s not something unusual here for very posh and well-off people to be living in what would probably seem like super small and pokey cottages to someone from America, the cost of housing is just insane when you live on a small island

Damn, en suites for every bedroom? I think the average house here has one bathroom per house!

It's the allocated square footage of the 'lots' and the size of the rooms that I find shocking when I see American houses. Sooo much space.

It’s been a while, but I’m pretty sure that that was the case yeah with the parents bedroom having their own bathroom and same for their daughters room. So many episodes would then be about how they were struggling for money and couldn’t keep up with the bills, there would be jokes sometimes too about the house being a pretty crappy in comparison to their neighbours, and I’d be thinking that umm your house and garden actually looks amazing to me. Of course I don’t know how much of that is just tv exaggeration, but idk I always saw people saying that it was a very realistic show in its depiction of poverty, and apparently back then it wasn’t even all that expensive to buy a house of that size in America.

And yeah I’m definitely pretty envious of what I’ve seen of the open floor layouts of American houses and how much more spacious they seem, the typical rooms in British houses have such a pokey and cramped feel about them!

You think ceilings above 6 feet are unusual? I've lived in London and no place I was in had low ceilings.

Are the ceilings in Frogmore under 6'? I take it back then.

Yes, they are. Not all of them, but some rooms were so low, Harry couldn't stand up straight. I believe it was originally built in 1850 and it just hasn't been remodeled to deal with taller people in 2023.

As for the closets, you have to remember they wanted Meghan to dress up and represent the Firm, so it would make sense to give her a decent closet, especially when you remember that when Harry moved out of KP, Camilla turned his entire bedroom into a custom closet for herself.

I think the entire monarchy should be abolished but I can also see the discrepancy between how they treated Harry and Meghan and every other member of the royal family.

Literally every other royal, even those who barely work, were given huge estates, from Andrew and Edward to Anne and William. William has 4 homes, none of which he's paid for.

Yes, the location is good but the cottage was bare bones. The discrepancy between how he and Meghan were treated is obvious. Anne got a mansion on 730 acres. Her daughter Zara, was given a 7 bedroom estate next to Anne's property.

I mean weren’t Harry and Meghan going to eventually be given Frogmore cottage which has 10 bedrooms? I really don’t understand why you’re so stuck on how awful and unsuitable this particular cottage was, it’s not like they were banished there forever, they were definitely going to get their own huge house in time as well, it was just being renovated for them

Because none of the other royals had to live in a cramped cottage for 2 years while renovations were going on. And William and Kate lived in their home in Wales and only spent time at NC when they had to be in London for special events. They didn't live there full time. Harry and Meghan had no estate in Sussex they could live in while Frogmore was being renovated.

And why give them Frogmore? It was an antiquated building that had been broken up into 5 apartments for servants. Why weren't they given Adelaide cottage to begin with? It was right there sitting empty until the Queen gave it to William, last year. And William already had 3 other residences.

Literally every other royal, even those who barely work, were given huge estates, not former servants quarters. The discrepancy between how he and Meghan were treated is obvious. What aren't you getting?

Are you aware we're discussing how the monarchy lives, not the general population?

Funny you have an issue with Harry's housing but no problem with William having been given 4 lavish homes.

It's not a comparison between an average citizen and Harry, it's between the entire royal family and Harry. 🤷

William and Kate lived in Wales for two years and used Nottingham cottage when they were in London for public events. They didn't live there full time.

William was still with the RAF flying helicopters back then and he and Kate were based in Wales. So it's not exactly accurate to say they lived there for two years. The cottage was at their disposal for two years is more accurate.

...where they lived in a farm cottage they rented for 750 quid. Within the context of UK accommodation, that's still pretty swell but it's simply not true that William started out with a choice of four mansions.
