I recently came to the conclusion that my Mom's dad was not her biological dad, and that my Grandma (died in 2014) had a fling or affair with a local guy who was crazy about red heads. I don't blame her, her husband was a mean, selfish alcoholic.

After consulting with my uncle, we decided it would be best not to tell my Mom. Still not sure if my mom's other 3 siblings have the same dad.

My mother's "step father" is/was 1000% her bio dad. Grandmother would never admit it, but among other things my mother was the only one of my grandmother's three children who was allowed and welcomed to take his last name. Only her older children blamed her for cheating on and later divorcing their asshole father (in the 50s).

My mom has never told one of her cousins that she had a half-brother who was born six months after her. My mom is the genealogist of the family and has various members of the family (there was a total of 13 siblings between my grandmother and grandfather). So this cousin took the test as a request but doesn’t really care about the results ( ... )

My uncle found out from one of these ancestry kits that he had a daughter he never knew about from a one night stand when he was a teenager. Definitely a shock for them, but it happened years before he ever met my aunt and they had their kids so no drama there. They first time they met her they said it was like an instant connection, she immediately felt like family, and now they get together a couple times a year (she lives far away). It's like the one "secret kid" story I've heard of that didn't fuck up a family lol

My best friend’s dad found out he had another daughter about a decade before he married and had my friend. Apparently the mom was his high school ex who left him for another guy but found out she was pregnant around the same time and decided not to tell him the baby might be his. He left town and generally knew she had a kid but thought it was the other guy’s; they ran into each other FORTY YEARS LATER and she spilled the beans.

so funny because I was going to post this in the roundup tonight -

"Somebody was passing" appears to be the story of every remotely attractive white person on Finding Your Roots https://t.co/jbLC6xqBm3

How strange/interesting tho? My mom's told me I have several different ethnicities mixed on my father's side and while I would be potentially interested in seeing how that shakes out I also don't want my DNA on file in one of those facilities either.

Yeah I’m dying to try 23andme because my grandpa always swore we had some Romani blood in our family and I really want to know if he was right but I’m freaked out about some company having my DNA.

I did Ancestry.com and I think it’s been fun with all the little sub-groupings for, like, predisposition for eye colors or whether you think cilantro takes like socks. (Although it confirmed I am a very genetically homogenous white person.)

I got my mom a kit last year for Mother's Day and she was really excited about it. It came back 90% Scandinavian and 10% Northern Germanic. It was kind of funny because I think she expected some kind of surprise, but it matched up completely with what we know of her family
