While participating in the PBS show 'Finding Your Roots' host Henry Louis Gates Jr had to inform Joe Manganiello prior to filming that his paternal grandfather wasn't actually related to him. Joe is 0% genetically related to anyone named "Manganiello". His actual grandfather was a Black man of mixed race.
Other family discoveries:
- His 5th paternal great-grandfather was a slave who became free before slavery was abolished in Massachusetts.
- A distant relative fought in a non-segregated Continental Army unit
- His maternal great-grandmother was a survivor of the Armenian genocide and great-grandfather a German prison officer.
