The Orville: New Horizons Episode 3.8 "Midnight Blue" Discussion Post

Jul 21, 2022 19:09

First off, I'd like to remind everyone that the tie-in novella for the show, titled "Sympathy for the Devil", has released in ebook/audiobook form. Linking that post here for anyone needing more information. It's available on Amazon and through a Disney imprint. Maybe other places too, I haven't really checked.

Enjoyed this ep. There's a couple of slightly messy threads of the whole story which I couldn't help but notice but I really like how they touched on modern issues in this ep.

Also, the scene with Dolly Parton was just wonderful.

I SCREAMED at the [Spoiler (click to open)]Dolly Parton cameo. As soon as Talla said "go to the holodeck, there's someone the captain would like you to meet" I was like NO YOU DIDN'T SHUT UP

Overall, another stunning episode. God, I will be devastated if this doesn't get more seasons.

I forgot what I wanted to mention in my borderline incoherent comment from last night, but I thought the reaction from Kelly when the Mochlans asked if she and Bortus were a thing was super interesting compared to her reaction when the Jenisi (sp?) asked if she was with Ed. The latter was borderline "ew cooties" and the former was more of a pleasant surprise, like something she hadn't considered before but made her realize that there was something there. Man, I just love Adrianne.

I couldn't stand Kelly in the first season but I've done a whole 180 on her. She's still not my top-5 since there are so many amazing characters in the show, but she has been AMAZING this season and I'm here for it.

I'm still worried they'll shove Ed/Kelly down our throats one day but right now I'm kind of feeling Kelly/Bortus lol

I came into the show already a fan of hers from FNL so I had a built-in bias towards Kelly from the onset.

I'm terrible at shipping because I just see two actors with chemistry and say "This is nice" but if the next week they'll pair 'em up with someone else, I'm just like "Hmmm...maybe this works too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ "

I usually don't care one way or the other but 02.04 "Nothing Left on Earth Excepting Fishes" lit a brightly burning torch for Ed/Teleya, the only other one that comes close is Korrasami from the Legend of Korra lol

Idk how I feel about Bortus/Kelly since I reeeeally like their friendship, especially since the “shared birthday episode” (which had me dying lolol) BUT if it’s done well then I’m here for it. I would hope they would consider addressing Bortus’s “cultural indoctrination” in regards to being born and raised in a male dominated culture where they’re all meant to be homosexual.

I want it so badly to be renewed but with McFarlane making Ted, which no one asked for, idk how it’s going to go.

McFarlane said in the below interview that he and the cast are hopeful for the fourth season. I think it’s a matter of how well it does on Hulu and Disney+.

FWIW, I think they may be filming Ted now. Scott Grimes was doing a Q&A on IG and he had a mustache and mentioned he was running late for work. I know he has a main role on the show and I'm imagining it's what his character might look like, although I guess the mustache could be for a different role entirely.

Penny Johnson Jerald was hyping people up to tweet the other day about wanting a season four. I don't think it's as settled as I once thought it was, but I'm still keeping my expectations low

*draws hearts around this show* I love it so much I almost don't want to talk about it? if that makes sense lol. I just want to let it exist in its perfection. All I need in life is warm, comforting sci-fi and Orville scratches that itch so perfectly.

the Kelly/Bortus was DEFINITELY intentional, Adrianne was delivering the bedroom eyes big time. And while I am so happy for Topa that Klyden has seen the error of his ways, I definitely sensed some yearning under the surface in Kelly in that last scene, she felt like she wasn't needed anymore with Klyden back.

Gordon was absolutely precious in this ep

The Moclans leaving the Union felt very inevitable after "Sanctuary" in season 2. Between splitting with the Krill and now the Moclans too, they are setting up the Union to be SUPER vulnerable to the Kaylon.

I feel like Bortus seemed disappointed that Klyden was back, in a sense. There's this look he sort of gives Kelly/in response to her entry during the last scene. I'm curious how it will play out, but I know that they'll most likely keep it for next season (if we get it) so that sucks lol

I love Gordon more with every rewatch. I think he's fast becoming one of my absolute favorite characters. He's the best.

I definitely got the impression that Bortus welcomed Klyden back for Topa's sake much more than for his own. He mentioned in the beginning of the episode that Klyden was better at talking to her about some things, and as much as WE all hate Klyden, Topa has always loved him. But I do feel like Bortus has moved on personally? Like he is glad Klyden has come around but it's all too late for that relationship. That's MY reading of it at least.

I read him the same way. His whole arc since the beginning basically has been becoming more emotionally distanced from that relationship.
