"For reference: In 2017, Kirsten Dunst made comments about Tom's first Spider-Man movie saying it was just a "cash grab" and that the original movies that she was in were obviously better"

omg I had no idea!!

well kirsten dunst was right in her statement, I would say. It WAS a cash grab, and the Toby movies are better. Its literally the only reason why No Way Home was good --- because it had the Tobey spiderman and villain's in it. lol.

I'm just surprised she commented.

oh yeah, sorry my comment was more in response to what you quoted. As I hadn't actually read the text yet, and immediately went to the comments. lol.

I mean tbf literally every Marvel film post-Iron Man is a cash grab so it's not like kiki lied lmao superhero movies were rly a different landscape when those original movies came out, like we would never get as quirky and stylistic a director as Sam Raimi making modern Marvel films.

I mean, so were all the Spider-Man movies?

It was way different back then though lol lots of superhero movies had flopped not far before, the Daredevil movie, the Batman movies everyone hates etc. I can see why working with someone like Sam Raimi in the early 2000s would've seemed more interesting to her than modern Marvel films.

EDIT: Just for an example of what I mean - scenes like this. This scene was filmed in such classic Sam Raimi Evil Dead style, it was super cool and everyone loved it but you will not see scenes like this in a modern Marvel film because they force directors to work within a strict template - THAT is what makes them feel more cash grabby. They have a set formula for the sounds and imagery now, back then it really wasn't the same.

You could argue the very first Spider-Man movie was an artistic risk, of all of the SM movies. But it was financially very successful and a big hit at the time. The sequels were greenlit and the schedules of release kept up so Sony could keep the rights and make money off the franchise.

Lose her mind? I doubt she'll care.

Kiki was MJ sorry Zendaya. She was at times the heart of the movie. Marvel made MJ literally irrelevant with all the sausage on screen. And I say that as someone who likes Zendaya more than Kiki.

"and switched up and said she would love to reprise her role and be a part of it"

I mean they literally used the nostalgia from the 00s Spidey films to market this film. Erasing her was already shitty on the films part.

Yeah I feel like Tom’s movies didn’t have nearly as much hype until they were hyping up the other Spider-Man’s.

Zendaya's MJ has no personality beyond hating everything and everyone

I don't remember Kiki saying that, lol. I have some nostalgia for the Raimi SM movies, but the female characters in that trilogy aren't exactly well written, lol

she actually said it in multiple interviews lol

"We made the best ones, so who cares?" Dunst said before continuing: "I'm like, 'You make it all you want." They're just milking that cow for money. It's so obvious. You know what I mean," she finished.

"I don't care," she revealed, referring to Sony's recent Spider-Man reboot. "Everyone likes our Spider-Man. C'mon, am I right or what? Listen, I'd rather be in the first ones than the new ones."

Nope. It was one interview. I am a stan so I would know.

Also: “ This was amidst Zendaya receiving a ton of backlash for being cast as MJ”

I doubt she even knew that were a new MJ or who Zendaya even was at the time, much less that there was backlash about it lol
