When do you all think Broadway will be back? I know they said it’ll remain shut until June 2021 at least but honestly, I think it’s going to be more like June 2022, if that. It’s not like cinemas or retail or hospitality where you can partially open. If Broadway opens you need maximum capacity to make it profitable.
I think Broadway will be one of the LAST things to go back to ‘normal’ bc they need sell out shows to turn a profit and the seats in Broadway theaters are so close together there is NO WAY the current layout can adhere to social distancing and make enough to stay open.
A vaccine plus everyone has to have access plus there'd need to be a way to prove a person had it or enough people need to have gotten it plus time for herd immunity... all of that takes many months, if not longer. After that happens, then the companies can begin, but that could begin all the way at casting again, plus minimum rehearsal times per union requirements, so it would be a long while rather than right after vaccines get approved. :(
Rent is overrated and such a sanitized version of what it is to be an artist, I find it insufferable.
The original Dreamgirls cast is flawless, and I honestly don't see it with Jennifer Hudson. Her voice is amazing but that's about it for me, I don't find her acting anything remarkable. It's like her emotion almost never reaches her eyes, it's odd.
Back in the 70's and 80's, my mom and about 20 of her friends used to go see a Broadway show every month, when tickets for a Saturday night performance were $10 or less (Imagine being able to see a Broadway show for less than the cost of a ticket to a movie?!?). She saw all of the huge musicals with their original casts; A Chorus Line, Evita, Dreamgirls, Company, Grease, The Wiz, Chicago, Ain't Misbehavin', etc.
Of all the shows she's seen, to this day she still says she never saw anything like Jennifer Holiday's "And I am Telling You I'm Not Going." The crowd gave her a 5 minute standing ovation and the energy in that theater was absolutely insane. Even after all of these years, when she hears that song, she still gets goose bumps and is transported to that night in January of 1982 when she sat in that audience and experienced it for the first time.
Live theater is such a cultural touchstone. I'm so afraid of the the effect this pandemic is going to have on it.
That sounds like an amazing experience. I’ve only been to a few shows, but yes, there is nothing that can replace that live experience; it’s just magical. I’m not even a big Les Mis fan as such, but when I saw John Owen Jones sing “Bring Him Home” I suddenly started crying. It took me completely off guard, and apparently several people around me as well because they were asking for tissues. It was just such an unexpected emotional reaction and I think it could’ve only happened at a live show
wow i'm so jealous of your mom's experience! my dad also saw the obc of a chorus line and i've always been jealous of that but that + all your mom's others have me really wishing i could have had that experience
