these noms are an all-around mess. typical sag.

regina's snub is a disgrace

americans getting ensemble but not indivdual noms for matt or keri is laughable.

not surprised cause actors genuinely have bad taste. there's no way any of them actually watch jack ryan (because i don't know anyone who watched jack ryan), they just included jim halpert (he should leave the acting to emily tbh. he has no range.) in cause they recognized his name.

honestly do any of the branches/unions that vote in these have good taste? every time they release those ~secret ballot of an awards voter~ articles it's always like "lol I didn't watch half this shit" or "lol I just like this person" no matter what branch they're from

The amount of times Ive seen someone say they didn't watch X, Y, Z film and voted for that film is mind boggling. Then you've got the ones who don't watch all the films sent out for the "your consideration" stuff and only watch the ones with awards buzz and I'm just like how are you allowed to vote?

I kind of get it at the "we're still compiling the nominees" stage of things - 'cause like, think of every laughable FYC ad you've ever seen, I'm sure they get more screeners than anyone is actually capable of watching. Like most Oscars campaigning is probs just convincing people to watch the damn screener.

But once you've got final nominations I think they (should) have a responsibility to watch everything in any category they plan on voting in.

I'm the most mad about Regina King & Beale Street in general; hoping the Oscars make better choices.

No one can possibly be surprised by Widows getting shut out at this point, right?

I just watched First Reformed last night, and damn, that escalated quickly! It was a beautiful, visually striking film, and Ethan Hawke's performance was excellent, but I'm not enamored with the script, especially the last third or so.

same re: First Reformed. It wound up going in a completely direction than what it seemed, so I felt a bit let down by that. The Bresson and Bergman parallels were pretty striking though (if not plagiarism-lite), so I don't know how to feel about that. I agree that the visuals were beautiful though, and I'm in love with the 1.37:1 aspect ratio

I guess I'm not surprised anymore, but I will continue to be mad every SINGLE time Widows is snubbed bc what the actual hell are they thinking 🤬

IMO this means A Star is Born is probably our Best Picture winner, isn't it super rare for BP winners to not get the ensemble nom? I don't see it happening for any of the others here except maybeee Blackkklansman (but I think that's getting the "Screenplay win as your consolation prize" Oscar.)

also Bohemian Rhapsody Best Picture nom is totes happening and like… how. I get it for Rami but the movie itself is a glorified Lifetime Original.

tbh I like this year's awards crop a lot less than last year's on the whole.

Shape of Water didn’t get an Ensemble nom last year.

But I totally think A Star is Born is winning Picture.

I think TSoW winning without Best Ensemble is only like the second time that's happened and that seemed like the sort of movie that would play way better with the art/design/technical-type branches than the actors anyways. I don't see like, Green Book or w/e picking up enough support there to win.

I could see it for Roma maybe, depending on how much support the studio throws behind its campaign.
