Hi There!

Aug 29, 2008 15:56

So, it's been a while you guys. I've started writing original fiction (and you've stopped using LJ cuts) so...here you go.

Fandom: Original Sci-Fi Epic (where people have supernatural abilities and fly around in spaceships through wormholes and a somewhat-but-not-really-evil force is conquering the galaxy)

Character Name: Anand Ghosh, age 33
Brief background of character: When the story opens up, he's a somewhat detatched loner with a passive-aggressive sort of death wish who sort of floats from planet to planet, finding people who are in the process of developing abilities and shacking up with them as they learn. As a kid, he was a child prodigy, but because he lacks motivation or drive, he preffered following other people he trusted, rather than striking out on his own. Once upon a time, he was arguably one of the most powerful people in the known galaxy (the most powerful person is Liselle, listed directly below, and was also his girlfriend for a time) but due to a series of events including a sensory deprivision suit and the nebulous really-evil bad guys towards the end of the last war, he lost his abilities. He doesn't ever officially join the crew of 'good guys', but rather tags along because it hold his interest more than his previous aimless drifting did, both personally and professionally.
Character's position or job: Mentors Jarnell and Tobias, acts as a medic
Strengths/Skills: Swordplay, explaining things, connecting with people
Are these skills typical of the fandom? If not, why?: His empathy with people (and always with specific people, he is never really aroused by images or concepts or events unless he knows someone who is personally involved in them) is unique, but other than that he shares these skills with several other supporting characters.
Weaknesses/Bad habits: Apathy towards galactic events, willingness to place his life at risk, still cares very deeply for Liselle
Distinctive features, if any: Physically, he's a fairly good looking guy of mostly South Indian decent. Sexually, he's bisexual.
Are these features unique in the fandom? If so, why?: Not particularly.
Connections to canon characters (if any): Liselle's former boyfriend, former boyfriend(sex buddy?) of several other supporting characters, future love interest of Jonavon.
How does your character get on with those around him/her?: Most people like Anand. He's friendly, and it seems genuine even if it is mostly superficial. He doesn't like getting close to people emotionally, but sometimes he finds himself in situations where it's impossible not to form a bond, at which point things get decidedly more complicated for him. He would prefer to avoid conflict.

Character Name: Liselle Johnston, age 30
Brief background of character: Like Anand, Liselle is a child prodigy. Unlike Anand, she is a self-motivator, and is extreemely driven, making her a leader. There's a whole lot of backstory about the universe this is set in I don't want to spoil for you, but suffice it to say that the people with abilities (currently I'm calling them Magi) are a minority group treated similarly to people treat homosexuals in the USA- including the part where Magi are not allowed to serve openly in the military. She lobbied for this to be recinded when the Aeronare conflict developed into warfare, because it made no sense not to allow people who could shoot lightning out of their hands and the like NOT fight. After a series of very long and frustrating events, she gives up on the legal method, more or less demolishes the Parliment, and goes off to lead a group of formerly discharged Magi back to the front lines, where they begin pushing back the invading forces. The war ended, with the human side winning, and there were a few months where the general population wasn't really sure what she was doing (she was in seclusion with high-ranking memebers of the human government, trying to negociate for a stronger military to counter act the 'real threat' she had discovered) before she seemingly turned evil and started taking over the galaxy. This is more or less where the story opens.
Character's position or job:Overlord of the Freedom Army
Strengths/Skills: Mastery of pretty much an ability you can think of, charismatic leader, highly intelligent
Are these skills typical of the fandom? If not, why?: No, because she's my main villanness, and therefore has to be uber-powerful
Weaknesses/Bad habits: Has a well-founded if overbearing dislike of authority figures, bordering on prejudice, and trusts no one completely.
Distinctive features, if any: Physically, she's a red-haired white girl with brown eyes. Sexually, she's heterosexual.
Are these features unique in the fandom? If so, why?: Nope. Pretty common, actually.
Connections to canon characters (if any): Anand's former girlfriend, the main antagonist
How does your character get on with those around him/her?: She's polite, professional, and very good at making other people feel important and included, but isn't really friends with anybody except maybe her main General, who is a supporting character more than anything else. Anand she let get close because he was the only other person she knew who could match her in power, and she's oddly drawn to Jarnell in a non-sexual way for much the same reasons.

Character Name: Jarnell Trinidad, age 24
Brief background of character: Jarnell grew up in a rural/suburban sort of setting, with a close-knit family of four and several cousins to romp around in. She manifested at an early age, but didn't want her life to change, so her family opted not to have her trained, or to even inform the government that she had begun to develope abilities. She lived a more-or-less normal existence until the age of 16, when a large chunk of her planet was wiped out by the Violet Death, for which Jarnell blamed herself. After that, she fell into the guardianship of her older cousin, Jonavon, who runs a cargo ship. They've been working on this ship for the past eight years together, during which Jonavon (who is a bit uncomfortable around Magi) urged her to keep her abilities a secret. She did so, and even after Anand guessed at them, and Tobias found out about them, she went through great lengths to hide their extent, until a series of angsty event forced her to lose control. She more or less leveled a small army bunker, and, as it turns out, her abilities are equal in power to what Anand's were and Liselle's are.
Character's position or job: Co-pilot, cook, and gradually becoming the de facto leader.
Strengths/Skills: The growing mastery of almost every ability you can think of, cheerful optimist, cares deeply for galactic events.
Are these skills typical of the fandom? If not, why?: No, but as the main hero, she has to be just as unique as Liselle
Weaknesses/Bad habits: She's a control freak; she feels she has to be, because she's deathly afraid of her power. She also doesn't like it when situations change in unexpected ways.
Distinctive features, if any: Physically, she's a half-black, half-hispanic girl, with dark skin, dark hair, and dark eyes. Sexually, she's heterosexual.
Are these features unique in the fandom? If so, why?: Not at all.
Connections to canon characters (if any): Jonavon's cousin, future love interest of Tobias.
How does your character get on with those around him/her?: She's cheerful, and a bit flirty early on in the story, although she sobers up as the story progresses. Most people find her cute and charming, if a little naive. She's friendly towards everyone she gets a good vibe off of, and tries to ignore everyone else.

Character Name: Tobias Gent, age 42
Brief background of character: Tobias spent mostly of his life on Earth, comes from a well-to-do family, and as an adult worked as an aid to various members of Parliment. He family expected that he'd one day rise to the position of Parliment member himself one day, but those dreams were derailed when he manifest in a spectacular fashion, by teleporting into the office of his girlfriend's boss after finding out that she had died. He underwent training at the Magi school of Mozambique, where because of his almost unique ability of teleporting, he went through the excellerated program. For a while there, it would appear to everyone that he is the main hero of the story.
Character's position or job: General handyman around the ship, future figurehead of the Resistence movement.
Strengths/Skills: Excellent elemental abilities, above-average physical abilities, good with electronics, knowledge of 'Old Earth' history and culture, organizational skills
Are these skills typical of the fandom? If not, why?: Yes to the first three, the fourth is a quirk, and the fifth is just about as common then as it is now.
Weaknesses/Bad habits: Somewhat uncomfortable about staying in lower-income areas, horrible mental abilities, menial spatial abilities
Distinctive features, if any: Physically, he's a shaved-bald white guy with green eyes. Sexually, he's heterosexual.
Are these features unique in the fandom? If so, why?: Nope.
Connections to canon characters (if any): Future love interest of Jarnell
How does your character get on with those around him/her?: He's somewhat cynical and bemused by everything, so not many people like him at first glance. He's a very passionate person about the things he cares about, though, and people are generally happy to work with him.

Character Name: Jonavon Corrington, age 38
Brief background of character: In his youth, Jon was a moderately inteligent, well-spoken individual, who had hoped to make a career out of being a diplomat. He gave up this chance to stick by his pacifist beliefs and orgainize a draft dodge, for which he was later arrested. As the Aeronare conflict worsened, his status as a non-violent prisoner made him eligible for a program which forced inmates to fight on the front lines. Placed in a kill or be killed situation, Jonavon fired automatically. During the next several months, he found himself unable to reconcile his actions with his beliefs, and therefore more or less stopped thinking independently all together. His superiors saw this as an asset, and he became involved in several covert operations, including assassination, causing him to further shut down. After the outbreak of Violet Death on his home planet, he was able to secure a hardship discharge, and is today a rather normal person, if an extremely repressed one. Jarnell doesn't know any of his background, other than that he fought in the Aeronare War, and he prefers this, but events during the series sometimes involve his past cropping up to haunt him.
Character's position or job: Pilot, owner of the Rhapsody
Strengths/Skills: Very good shot with a rifle, crack pilot, very professional
Are these skills typical of the fandom? If not, why?: No to the first two, yes to the third.
Weaknesses/Bad habits: Apathy towards current galactic events (although this is more weariness than anything else), and tends to repress emotionally
Distinctive features, if any: Physically, he's a dark-haired white guy with blue eyes. Sexually, he's homosexual.
Are these features unique in the fandom? If so, why?: Really, no.
Connections to canon characters (if any): Jarnell's cousin, Anand's future love interest.
How does your character get on with those around him/her?: Jonavon doesn't normally initiate conversations unles they're important, but he is personable in his own quite way. When the story opens, he and Jarnell have a brother/sister relationship, which gets strained as more and more of his past is revealed, as she's upset that he didn't tell her.
