Just do one thing

Just do one thing. Just do 3 minutes of a task that will take longer, say 2 hours, but that you just can't start. Self-directed advice, but feel free to do it yourself ( Read more... )

You are so right, and this isn't taught remotely enough.

Starting and stopping are what willpower is for. In the US people talk about it as a requirement for persistence, but it's not built for that.

Start, and often the relief and the non-horror of doing will give you the momentum you need. Andif not, you know, and can turn to something else.

Best of luck!

Synchronicity!
Over the past 3 days I have finally started doing 10 mins filing a day - bank statements, gas bills and the like.
We have an A4 box of paper-sized box of unsorted stuff to get through upstairs, plus about half as much again downstairs.

I used to think I had to blitz it all, but now I'm trying it this way for a bit.

I've only just seen this post but earlier today I sorted out the five cardboard boxes of stuff under the desk in my room. The three cardboard boxes of presents were tidyed and reduced to two. Then I emptied the cardboard box of new craft bits and bobs into the proper craft boxes. The box of books, some of which I'd forgotten I'd ever bought, were put on shelves. And I sorted out a carrier bag of miscellaneous crap and gave them all proper homes. This wasn't part of a Do One Thing thing. The arrival in the post of my Tank Girl Tea Making Division patch reminded me that I had a Ghost in the Shell Tachikoma patch but I couldn't remember where it was. I'd bought more than one as presents which is why I thought it might be in the present boxes but it wasn't. I eventually found it in the carrier bag of miscellaneous crap. Five boxes and one carrier bag of stuff sorted. I'm happy.
