Rice cooker?

I like rice a lot. The rice I use most is brown rice from a whole food shop - not the sort of par-cooked brown rice that's available in supermarkets. With the oppressive heat lately, I haven't felt much like cooking; particularly, I've felt too hot and bothered to boil rice for 45 minutes. I'm on a diet where I can eat as much rice as I want to, ( Read more... )

My significant others had one at their place for a while. I used it a few times but really didn't see what the advantage was over a pot...

Some brands might be better than others, though.

the advantage over a pot is that you don't have to pay attention to it. with a pot, you have to watch it and make sure to turn off the stove when it's done or you'll burn it. a rice cooker...you just dump in the rice and water and leave it. it cooks till its done, then it flips to the "warmer" and it just keeps it warm until you're ready, whenever that is. no attention required. the lazy part of me loves this. :)

at boarding school about 50% of my housemates were cantonese. rice cookers were banned in dorms & there were penalties if caught. despite this, there was a lot of illicit rice cooker-usage going on, which can only lead me to believe that they must be amazing :-D

I think a rice cooker would be a lot of use to you, especially if you eat rice often.

Maybe one that does other stuff too would be nice.

My rice cooker was $5 at a yard sale. I swear by it. I think most if not all rice cookers can also be steamers if you put a wet paper towel in the bottom.

Rice cookers don't know the difference between white and brown rice AFAIK. (My rice-cooker is COLOR-BLIND!!!111)

I answered as if my Cuisinart 8 Cup Rice cooker was still alive. A room mate turned on a burner of the stove with it over top of it and melted the whole thing. I made brown rice with it all the time, and it was perfect.

You put a whole bag of rice in it (the kind of bag that weighs like a pound or two I think, it makes 8 cups total), enough water, and turn the thing on and the light goes from yellow to red or whatever and it's done. No worries!
