hopeing it gets easier - i think you ROCK muchly so even trying it.

I've seen plenty of pople doing streaches in Russel square so i don't think people will think that is strange. (i like unnng through the fountai area really fast to see if can avoid getting wet - no one has ever shouted or stared enoiugh to make me fl uncomfortble though expect i've had some bemused-looks. And the moving from walking to jogging s also quite normal because of the vrying amounts of crowdedness

I'm back now :-) Thanks. The thing is, I rarely worry about what people actually think. I worry about what I think people think, which is an entirely different thing. The-things-I-think-people-think is actually my negative self-image. It's me who's thinking I'm fat and slow and lazy and pathetic. Hence the endless battles between my self-loving part and my self-hating part. I <3 positive affirmations :D

I love Russel Square and its fountain.

I'm also terrified of running in public, though I've been trying to do it recently. I mostly do it at night ;) I'll walk down the street in my karate gi, but I won't run in public. Shy! Good luck with it, and it's pretty cool and inspiring that you're doing it.

(If I don't stretch before I jog my shins really hurt.)

Duh, that's what I've been doing wrong, then!

I'm sure you know this already with the martial arts stuff you do, but in case you don't: make sure you warm up a bit before you stretch. You can also do shin-strengthening exercises:

Keeping one foot off the ground (it doesn't matter if you're standing or sitting), point your toe towards your knee and down again, repeat until you can't do any more. Repeat with the other foot.

Again keeping one foot off the ground, do little semi circles from left/right/left until you can't do any more. Repeat with the other foot.

I run in the dark too. I like it dark and rainy best (refreshing). I'm trying to do scary things though, because the more I do them the less scary they get :D So I've been running in the sunshine!

Yes. This entry sums up exactly why I find running hard and also why I persist with it anyway.

*grins*

Cool! Obviously not cool that you find it tough... cool that someone else struggles with this and I'm not alone.

I share some of the feelings you say here about people noticing if I jog slowly or when I stop to walk - also ditto several of your reasons. I *love* that it is free excercise that I can do at any time. I totally get that smug feeling and to some extent this help me fend off the negative thoughts (even if I'm slow at least I'm out there jogging).

After a while I've started to feel a kind of invisability when jogging - that people notice but then immediately filter you out .

Good for you.
