So... Hudlin is leaving Black Panther. Without going in to the issue of whether his run was any good or not, or what Black Panther should be, they just renumbered and relaunched the book with a new volume. 6 issues in, they're taking the writer off it ( Read more... )

I honestly think the only reason that the book got renumbered was because of the whole "ZOMG FEMALE BLACK PANTHER" event. You know, "drastic" change in style and whatnot.

Though they didn't do it with Captain America after he, you know, so.

Ms. Marvel didn't go to renumbering when it became Karla Sofen's book.

It's just the decision to change the writer so soon after the relaunch that makes no sense. Imagine if Pak was taken off Incredible Herc before the first arc was even out in shops; what sense does it make?

That decision is what's making me think that the book only got renumbered because of the change in protagonist. Besides, Ms. Marvel is not dead, and there's no way in hell that the person starrng in that book at the moment will be permanent (because she's a villain).

I'm thinking that the book was simply planned out to go like this but someone at publicity or even the higher ups thought "I know, we'll make this a #1 so it makes more money!"

It doesn't make sense, but then again, the people who take these decisions often don't know anything about sense at all.

When was Dixon on Checkmate? Or do you mean Batman and hte Outsiders? Cuz that book...well, don't forget Bedard was there too

Was it Dixon who took over checkmate and sidelined all of the King, Queens, Knights and pawns and just wrote a story about his own character of a shape shifting "monster"? It was Checkmate in name only.

OR was that somebody else?

DC had a number of series, back in the '90s, that got cut off at somewhere around a dozen issues, sometimes less. Examples that come to mind:
  • "Chase" by Dan Curtis Johnson and JH Williams III (10 issues including 1Million, about DEO Agent Cameron Chase, who proceeded to bounce around various titles for a while before settling into the Kate Spencer "Manhunter" series)
  • Kaminsky and Martinbrough's "The Creeper" (12 issues including 1Million, following after his "death" in the Eclipso series and unifying all the previous origins; creepy and awesome)
  • "Chronos" by John Francis Moore and Paul Guinan (12 issues including 1Million, about the Walker Gabriel version of Chronos)
  • "Vext" by Keith Giffen and Mike McKone (six issues, about a very minor god of mishap and misfortune who is forced to settle on Earth when his pantheon's realm is foreclosed for insufficient worship)
There may be have been others, I forget. And yes, I thought of these because I own full runs of them and enjoyed them immensely. :-)

Chase was a HUGE crime to be cancelled, in my opinion. Ditto for Chronos, from what I heard.

I don't think Young Heroes in Love (which was actually pretty fun) lasted long, either.

Kelley Puckett had a depressingly short run on Green Arrow, during which he introduced Connor Hawke (:D!). He intended to stay on longer, but prior commitments to The Batman Adventures and other stuff took him off and we got Dixon instead (D:!).

Sean McKeever had a 5 issue run on Birds of Prey.

I can't think of any off the top of my head. Kurt Busiek on Post-IC Aquaman seemed a little...short.

I wonder what this means for the Black Panther cartoon.
