What is this place? Who's in charge here, and who has the arrogance to assume they can bring me here against my will, hold me in ignorance and keep me caged amongst strangers?

I refuse to stay here when my city needs me. You sit safe here in this boat of yours while greater men strive for better things. I cannot do the same. I will not. Be you man ( Read more... )

If you're still striving for greater things then it's a bit late for that. Don't you know you're dead?

I can't be dead. There's so much I haven't gotten done yet.

I'm sorry.

You're on a prison boat called The Barge. You're here to be "redeemed." If you are, then you get a second chance at life.

For what, exactly, do I need redemption? Everything I've done, I've done in service of my city.

[He will eventually stopped being surprised by how angry people sound... Eventually.]

The Admiral. I would answer more questions, but I am new myself.

What sort of Admiral would this be? Admiral who? What Admiral thinks he has the right to do this to me?

I know very little about this individual, other than that he is capable of reviving the dead and has done so to you. I wish I had more information.

Are you a prisoner too?

Good luck with the whole escaping thing. I'd recommend jumping off the deck. See what world you land in next.

I've seen what's outside! Nothing! I'm not fool enough to jump into nothing and expect to live.

"Lord d'Eath?" You come up with that all by yourself?

You're in post-mortem prison, son. Sorry.

[disclaimer: may or may not be actually sorry]

You mock my family? How dare you? The d'Eaths have been Lords in Ankh-Morpork since the days of kings!

Oh, a Lord, well that's different! They're obligated to sound all ridiculous.

Huh, Ankh-Morpork. You know a Dr. Hix?

My city needed me too.

[long, long pause.]

Er.

[The pause gets longer. There's some dribbled ink.]

d'Eath, did you say? That sounds like...

[He's the sort of guy who keeps track of these things and there's a skittering of ink whilst he goes to look for the histories of old families of Ankh-Morpork and check that name before he goes and makes a fool of himself]

Do you know Ankh-Morpork?

Of course I know Ankh-Morpork! My family has lived there for generations!

Who doesn't know of Ankh-Morpork? It's the Jewel of the Circle Sea, or it was, before these brigands and scoundrels seized power from those who truly deserve it!

There is a quota

Actually, everyone here doesn't know of Ankh-Morpork. They're all from a planet I'm told is either called the Roundworld or Earth. There's only ever been two people here from Ankh-Morpork, or even the Disc at once. I've been here 11 months or so; there was a Susan Sto-Helit, and Dr Hix from the Unseen University too. I'm Captain Swing of the City Watch.

...By brigands and scoundrels, who do you mean? because if you mean those who assassinated Winder, I'm with you all the way. Who is Patrician in your time?

Captain Swing? I've read of a Captain Swing.

I mean the Patricians. I mean the men who have the arrogance to believe they can rule better than those whose Destiny it is to sit on the throne. Lord Vetinari is the Patrician now, and he is as vile a man as has ever walked the Disc.
