Doing Okay

Hi, all!

I'm doing pretty well, all things considered. My hand may be a gaping horrorfest of wounds, but it doesn't really hurt much. That's probably since so many nerves got cut through, and just don't work now. The parts that hurt are the little scrapes that look like boo-boos in comparison, because they still have nerve endings ( Read more... )

Nerves... severed? Does that mean your left hand is permanently damaged? :(

No, probably not (and it was the right hand). What I mean is that much of the skin got cut all the way through, so the nerves in it aren't connected to anything anymore. The parts that are like that will become scar tissue, of course, and that won't have any nerves. My muscles are okay.

Additionally, the tendon under my middle finger knuckle was cut, but not torn through. It should heal back together okay. I have to be careful and keep moving it so I get the full range of motion back. . . right now, that finger's kind of droopy because the tendon doesn't have the tension necessary to lift my finger well.

Yep (see new comments above). We skipped the ambulance ride and went to a clinic because A) ambulance and emergency room are waaaayyy more expensive, B)emergency rooms have horribly long wait times, and C) neither of us has health insurance anymore. I wound up with 12 stitches to reassemble my hand, and some antibiotics to keep it from getting infected.

The EMTs on the scene checked us out as well, and before that, I used a spare shirt as a tourniquet and drank lots of water. While we were waiting for the emergency responders, a nice guy on a motorbike stopped and made sure I was okay until they got there. His name was Nathan, and he said he was a military medic (Air Force of Navy, I can't remember). It was awesome.
