Well, I didn't get to start the Jayne hat last night because I got involved with computer stuff instead. BUT! I did practice cello. Go me. And I will start the hat tonight since, so far as I know, I have nothing else planned.

Except maybe arguing with people, 'cuz here's my take on the latest LJ WhineFest... )

To quote Ron White on the subject of child molesters, registration and signs: "If you've been convicted of child molestation, I don't give a damn about your rights anymore."

Best line from a comedy sketch ever.

Trouble is that, AFAIK, the people being hit by this haven't been convicted of anything.

The literature journals, support groups and the RPG journals where the content did not contain any writing about the interest were, perhaps, a bit much, but I stand by what I wrote in my journal. I've no sympathy for the folks that were writing this stuff as fiction. I didn't read it before, won't read it if it comes back, and I won't miss it. The little vindictive voice in the back of my head says serves 'em right, fiction or not, but I won't go so far as to say so. They didn't force me to read it, and I didn't read it, so we co-existed oblivious, more or less, of each other.

I'm still not sure I'd be crying to a judge if I was them. I doubt the judge or a jury would find much sympathy when they found out what sort of fiction they were writing. Especially if it's intention was to turn people on.

Just my two cents.

If it was just the journals who wrote about/fantasized about/RP'ed about incest and pedophilia getting hit, I probably wouldn't be irked. Thing is, it isn't just them. Communities for and journals of pedophilia/incest/rape survivors are getting deleted just because of those words in their interests. RP journals of villians are getting deleted just because they have something like "stealing stuff" or "beating people up" in their interests. Check out the links below. This is why I keep repeating that LJ should investigate before they go delete-happy.

For the most part they're shutting down journals that advocate an illegal (and, to any sane person, disgusting) activity.

I don't think you quite understand the size of this. They're shutting down fanfic communities, literature discussion, rape survivors...

I appreciate their cause, but the people behind this are batshit.

I understand the size of it, yes. But it's not really those people who are shutting down these journals. From what I've read, they reported certain specific journals to LJ, yes, and they're rather proud of themselves for that. Whether or not they were justified I can't say, since I have no idea what specific journals they were targeting. And yes, maybe they're a bit holier-than-thou and a bit...uh, persistent.

But let's keep in mind that it was LJ itself that went about eradicating journals left and right. I suspect that the algorithm that they used to do so is faulty in that it was too general and thus took out literature discussions, survivors groups, et. al. I don't think anyone could go through the millions of LJ accounts manually to see who needed to be shut down, so I would bet that they used some sort of program to do so and that that program was, as I said, too general. So, if anyone is "batshit" (and perhaps a bit overreactive and over-zealous) it's LJ, yes? I think we should all step back, take a breath, engage the ( ... )

That said, I further suspect that LJ backs up its servers at least daily, so if anyone complains enough that they were wrongly deleted, my feeling is that they could probably get their journal/community reinstated fairly easily. Particularly if they pay for said journal...

I'll have to wait until I get home to find the post dealing with this, but it is NOT the case from what I've heard.

Me, I think that the situation could have been handled more delicately. Getting IP addresses and information on the members of those groups and so on. Jobs for the actual authorities, not a bunch of idiots who like to think they're "monster hunters" because they can use Google and send angry emails to Livejournal.

The bad ones needed to be shut down. But this action did far less good than it did harm.

This is the part that worries me. If you're right, all's fine and dandy, the wank dies down. But the cynical part of me greatly doubts that this will happen.

I think I've decided that I'll keep my head down during this whole thing. This isn't the first time that a group like this has screamed out and it certainly won't be the last. My feeligns on the matter are similar to yours. I'll happily f-lock posts in communities if it's requested by the mods, but I won't be running around like a chicken with it's head cut off.

And the folks who are screaming witch hunt have no clue what a real witch hunt is. All this is is some children fighting over the sandbox, nothing more.

The problem I have with the way LJ is handling this is that, from the reports I've gotten, they're not even bothering to investigate the journals. They're simply finding the "keywords" and deleting/suspending. As a result, not only are RP journals which "belong" the villians getting deleted, but they're also hitting survivor groups, law enforcement interest groups and other people who are most decidedly NOT endorsing/encouraging illegal behavior.

It's not about free speech. It's no about freedom of expression. Hell, it's not even about just fanfic or other fandom-type stuff any more ( ... )
