Well, I didn't get to start the Jayne hat last night because I got involved with computer stuff instead. BUT! I did practice cello. Go me. And I will start the hat tonight since, so far as I know, I have nothing else planned.

Except maybe arguing with people, 'cuz here's my take on the latest LJ WhineFest... )

It's not about free speech. It's no about freedom of expression. Hell, it's not even about just fanfic or other fandom-type stuff any more.

WFI backed LJ into a corner and insisted that they shut down these communities and journals. Sure, they've nabbed some criminals in what they've caught after throwing the net so wide, but goddammit most of the victims seem to have been innocent. Literary enthusiasts, fan communities, RPGs, even the frickin' abuse survivor support groups for helping victims of the very crimes they're trying to prevent!

I'm not advocating child abuse, child pornography, sexual abuse or anything like that. And I see where WFI are coming from. But their way of taking things into their own hands has been totally the wrong way of going about it. It's liek trawling the whole goddamn seabed just to find a few, specific little fishies; at the end of the day you're left with a few boxes of what you want, and EVERYTHING ELSE in the net gets tossed back overboard. Dead or dying, usually. (Okay, that might not've been the best analogy to use, but I'm tired and I can't think up a better one right now. I hope you see a little of what I'm trying to get at anyway.) Just "banning" certain journals because they contain certain terms not only sweeps up a whole lot of harmless stuff along with the few who are guilty, but does little in the way of actually helping nail those who ARE criminals. I've done a little digging and really, I'm not convinced WFI are really much more than a pressure group who've taken the step of being pro-active a little too far.

In the meantime, the REAL law enforcers who've probably been picking away at certain marked LJs/accounts/whatever for months have probably had all their work rendered useless because, in amongst the scramble of people rushing to edit their profiles and interests, there are probably some real criminals. Hell, WFI practically announced they were going to do this on their website. How stupid can you get? Putting up the cyberspace equivalent of a blinking neon sign like that, which might as well read "HEY PEDOES, GO HIDE NOW QUICK BEFORE WE COME TO GET YOU ON LJ!"

The more I'm reading, the more I keep ending up being pointed towards WFI as the source of most of the problems. Their cause is just, but they're not going about trying to stop the criminals in the right way. I suppose, in short, they should have just left things to the professional crime-fighters instead of sticking their noses in and getting involved here. It's done more harm than good.
