Movieverse:

Real tree or artificial?

Real, but live, so it can be planted afterward. Timmy wouldn't want to kill a tree.

Do the guys snoop looking for where the presents are hidden?

Donald snoops because he's still a ten-year-old at heart. Timmy would rather wait and be surprised on Christmas morning.

Do they decorate outside?

Yes, but sparingly and tastefully. No one suffers from Clark Griswold Fever at the Strachey-Callahan residence. Timmy is too well-bred and Donald is too lazy to cover the house in 100,000 whirling, flashing, multicolored lights or the yard in plastic Santas and ghastly inflatables. Nice wreaths on the windows and front door and a solar-powered candle shining from each windowsill would probably do it.

Bookverse

Real tree or artificial?Artifical, though every year Timmy will wax nostalgic over the scent of pine back from his boyhood Christmases in Poughkeepsie and inform Donald that, “This hideous old thing is going in the trash the day after Christmas and we will have a real Douglas fir next year ( ... )

Good questions.

Movie boys:

1. Real, because Timmy wouldn't have an artificial tree. He'd complain endlessly about the mess, however. Donald wouldn't care either way.
2. Don would snoop because that's his nature, and I suspect Timmy might try to take a peek.
3. Yes, but as Nyte said, it would be very tasteful.

Book boys:
1. Artificial, and they have the same one they've used for years (it looks awful) because Timmy can't find a place to recycle it. Tiimmy is quite the eco freak (even saves and recycles Don's used popsicle sticks), and I suspect he would see a real tree as a waste of resources.
2. I don't think they buy presents for each other. Instead, they go someplace nice and warm for the holidays.
3. Timmy will break down and buy a real wreath for the door because some charitable group suckered him into it. Don will pound a nail in the door to hang it up.

Timmy saving the popsicle sticks reminded me of how bookTimmy also has saved back a freezer load of chicken necks, and Don speculates that he's planning a chicken neck party sometime in the future. Love these guys!
