I'm a movieverse fan, so I'll take it from that perspective:
I think the guys have invested in a really nice, really large artificial tree by now. With their schedules, and Timmy's (as I imagine it) growing aversion to pine needles all over the place, and Donald's growing aversion to dragging the size tree that meets Timmy's standards into the house every year, I think they've opted for some convenience. And Donald insisted on a pre-lit one. So now they can mix a nice batch of martinis, start a fire in the fireplace, relax and enjoy trimming their tree together with romantic Christmas music playing, and have lots of leftover energy to make out by it when they're done. ;-) Timmy has compensated for the lack of pine with some well-placed baskets of pine-scented potpourri. Or, maybe genuine pine garlands on the staircase and the mantle.
Donald's a detective and by nature going to want to solve the mystery, so I think Timmy has developed wonderful ways to hide his presents and probably torment him a bit with building the suspense. On the other hand, I don't see Timmy as a present-hunter. I think he'll be curious, but want to be surprised.
I agree their outside decor is going to be tasteful and moderate, and since we know Timmy doesn't like heights (he's not happy with the fire ladder escape in Ice Blues), that leaves it to Donald's sense of adventure to determine how high up the lights go. Therefore LOL, I see lights on the shrubs in front, maybe some lighted pine garlands around the yard light, some big red bows, and maybe something religious-themed like a manger scene (not a giant cheesy plastic one, but something nice quality). Timmy was going to be a priest, which says to me that his religion ran deep enough for him to almost commit his life to it. I think he'd want a representation of the Christian/Catholic meaning of the holiday included, too. I can also see a trip to Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.
