Ahhhh, I just posted my thoughts and I had some of the same quesions!!! I wondered if Coulson was really Fury's puppet, or if Fury and he and switched roles and Fury was now in charge of the Avengers Initiative, but yes, Maria is certainly in charge of something and Stark doesn't even question her intel or her orders.
Totally worth it to have Coulson call him on that secret, drop the "spoiler" that Fury's still alive and would apparently be taking back the toolbox from Gonzalez, and that he was off to chat with Maria Hill and Gonzalez did not have an invite. Snarky Coulson is fun.
OMG, that was great! "Oops! Spoiler alert."
we see what's apparently a SHIELD training facility
I'm pretty sure it said it was the new Avengers Facility, which made me wonder who all those people running around in the background were.
I know Whedon has said that Coulson's still dead as far as the movies are concerned, but I was reading that as he's dead because the team doesn't know otherwise. The series is tied into the movieverse enough that it was

So instead of the SHIELD that grew out of the SSR, we're going to have SHIELD 2.0 without the Hydra bug, under the aegis of The Avengers? That could work, because even though a lot of the people there -- agents, techs, etc. -- were formerly with SHIELD, a new agency backed by The Avengers could go forth without SHIELD baggage. (Side note, you did catch that the guy who refused to launch the Project Insight ships in CA:TWS, citing "Captain's orders" was on the bridge of the helicarrier

What makes you think this?

I thought that was him, but I didn't recognize him well enough to pick him out without checking IMDb, and I forgot to do that after.
Joss can ignore it if it he wants
He can dislike it all he wants, but he can't ignore it unless Marvel allows him to.
I don't feel Whedon is coming from a place of malice or to be a dickNo, I think he's just finally able to say things he couldn't when Marvel was writing his paycheck. That said, not wanting Coulson to come back doesn't translate to the show and the MCU being separate entities, which he also said, and this is the part I disagree with because they are so intertwined is isn't funny

What makes you think this? It's what it sounds like what they're doing. They're taking old SHIELD resources but seemingly not using the name SHIELD anymore, except for Coulson's crew. Though during the big rescue scene, there was talk about that was what SHIELD was supposed to be, but there's still going to be a big stain on the name

That sounds a lot more coherent than anything I got from the film or series. I happened across the first Avengers movie on TV last night and I think I figured out what's been niggling me about A:AoU. There was too much happening, both plot wise and onscreen, so we had plots that weren't fully serviced, and fight scenes that were, IMO, too cluttered to tell what was going on half the time. You really can have too much of a good thing

I guess it gets confusing unless we think about it like fanfic - that one writer wrote this story that everyone liked and so since then different writers have been writing different parts of the story and cherry-picking what they like (characters and plot lines) and there's overlaps and retconning and outright contradictory stuff and we have to take each story as its own little universe - otherwise it's just way too confusing. :)
I guess a fanfic "shared universe" is the best way to view it, but I thought the whole point of the MCU was to reduce contradictions. Joss is sort of acting like a fanfic author who's going to go down with their OTP, overall vision, or whatever.
When the MCU connects everything, it can be very good, when it ignores or retcons, it can be good or very WTF inducing.
