SHIELD

I have questions that will involve spoilers for Age of Ultron and the most recent Agents of SHIELD regarding, well, SHIELD.

So do we now have three versions SHIELD? After Fury faked his death, he named Coulson Director, with the mission to rebuild SHIELD. We now know that Theta Protocol was Coulson working on getting the helicarrier operational under the radar, even from his own team. But after watching Age of Ultron and the most recent AoS, I really have to question if Coulson is really the director.

Based on The Winter Soldier, her cameo in AoS, and Age of Ultron, Maria Hill is still very much an agent of SHIELD hiding in Stark Corporation. I'm thinking she's filling in the role that was originally going to be Coulson's, as a liaison between The Avengers and SHIELD. On top of that, Fury is still lively for a dead guy, and Coulson's core team know about it because he saved Fitz and Simmons. Fury was the one coming in to save the day with the helicarrier, and the movie did not say anything about Coulson being involved in the project to get it up and running.

For reasons I still don't quite understand, they have not revealed to The Avengers that Coulson is alive. So despite media reports about SHIELD that could have mentioned his name, military ones from Talbot that most definitely did, and Cal calling him out in his hometown, broadcasting it no less, and JARVIS didn't pick that up? How can Coulson be the director of SHIELD, yet remain hidden from The Avengers and apparently a good chunk of SHIELD itself? Makes no sense. I know Whedon has said that Coulson's still dead as far as the movies are concerned, but I was reading that as he's dead because the team doesn't know otherwise. The series is tied into the movieverse enough that it was held back from full potential waiting for the events of The Winter Soldier to kick things into a new direction, and we know Coulson has been aiding Fury off the books.

Then we have Gonzalez in the mix. Or did. But he still represents a different way to do SHIELD, with the appearance of openness and equality, yet he was all about finding out Coulson's secrets, despite having a big one of his own. Bet he didn't tell all the SHIELD agents that look upon him as a savior because he didn't follow Fury's order to scuttle the carrier that Fury wanted sunk due to the cargo onboard. Gonzalez was probably was thinking more about that cargo than the crew, IMO, when he went against orders. Totally worth it to have Coulson call him on that secret, drop the "spoiler" that Fury's still alive and would apparently be taking back the toolbox from Gonzalez, and that he was off to chat with Maria Hill and Gonzalez did not have an invite. Snarky Coulson is fun.

So at the end of Age of Ultron, we see what's apparently a SHIELD training facility, which makes sense as they're rebuilding their ranks and their reputation, as well as a training ground for new Avengers, led by Captain America and Black Widow. But who's their boss? The not dead Fury, with no one outside of SHIELD and The Avengers knowing he's alive? Coulson, who's also dead, and The Avengers and probably the majority of SHIELD not knowing he's alive? Definitely not Gonzalez, and not just because of the most recent events, but I just don't think he could have commanded enough loyalty from enough SHIELD agents, though he has enough to disrupt things. Plus, he was just plain old-fashioned alive, and I'm starting to think you have to be dead to be the director of SHIELD these days.

So... who's the boss? Do you think things will be clarified in the finale of AoS?
