Because I've had a couple people already ask me a couple questions, I figure I might as well address them, and tack this up so that people can keep asking questions as they come up.
If we were to choose to write a post-war/pre-epilogue fic, *must* we take the epilogue as canon? That is, could I write a story featuring characters of Harry's generation that does not culminate in or point to them getting married/having kids in the formulations described in the epilogue?
Or if they have to "end up" there, can I mess with the presentation of relationships versus the reality (i.e., it looks to everyone like Harry and Ginny are married and fine, but they both know it is pretense/have other relationships)?
If you're writin a post-war/pre-epilogue fic, I'm going to say that it's not NECESSARY to end up at Epilogue Canon, but I think it would be HIGHLY interesting to mess with the presentation of that canon. However, this is your story. If it begins in the post-war/pre-epilogue nebulous canon, have fun with it.
I just realized I hadn't replied to this! Authors don't have to be a certain age. However, if you're writing NC17 stuff, I RECOMMEND THAT YOU DON'T SAY HOW OLD YOU ARE. We're running on a strictly don't ask, don't tell policy for ages; I, for one, know that putting age limits just encourages people to ignore them and lie about their ages like I did as a kid
There can be elements of any pairing you want. It's just that, if you're writing NG pairings, the FOCUS pairing has to be from the NG characters--everybody from Teddy Lupin down to Lily Potter and beyond. Pairings are slash or het--a threesome with two girls and a guy or two guys and a girl is considered het, and is allowed; get creative--and anything that doesn't focus on a romantic (read: sexual) relationship between characters is GEN (this includes friendship couples; if the characters aren't bomfing or at least snogging, it's gen).
And don't be afraid to ask as many questions as you need. I know I can be a little vague; I keep thinking everybody can read my mind!
Oh! Yeah, you're right that is a COMPLETELY different question, haha!
Hm. Well, in that case, it's kind of a toss up, since, though it's intergenerational, the POV character would be from the NG. If the story is taking place during the nineteen years before the Epilogue canon, consider it a post-war/pre-epilogue fic; if it's taking place with Epilogue canon, consider it Next Gen. It's up to you!
There won't be a cap on participators, but there will be a cap on participating. As many writers as want can sign up, but they can only submit one project (Artists are a little different, because a single artist can do things for multiple writers which is sadly the state of affairs at the moment).
I kind of really, really, really want to sign up as a writer (and I probably will, haha), but I just have a couple of questions.
1. Are any other limitations on what we can and cannot write? For example, can I write something like a non-magical NextGen AU (like, I don't know, hairdresser!Scorpius and his baristaboyboyfriend!Albus or something :P)? Scratch that - I just found my answer *facepalm.* Sorry 'bout that ;).
1. Do anything you want. Play around with the characters as much as you'd like. The only limitation is that you have to use Harry Potter characters as your focus characters for the duration of the fic (you can have OMCs and OFCs, but they can't be tell your story, see?).
2. No. Unless it turns out that there really WILL be only one person signed up as an artist. The rule is: Write OR Illustrate. If you happen to have artwork for the 'verse that is independent of the story (I have a drawing I did of Hugo for my story) that exists as a supplementary or 'verse piece, that's fine, but you cannot illustrate your own story.
