Ashe was stood in the private quarters of the house, having a sentimental moment with the door that led down to where her father stood with the band. She could hear the music slightly through the thick door, which she was currently willing to disappear. The entire feud was a bad idea, and she didn't want to attend. She stared even more harshly at the door until she reached out a hand, pushing it open with the hand that was decorated with her engagement ring.

She glided down the stairs, trying to keep her eyes averted from the many people who had more than likely noticed her by now. She seemed to be a start resemblance to the walls in a dress of pure white which trailed slightly on the floor behind her, and her hair shone with glitter. Admist it all, she didn't have a mask, but that was for the best. She reached her father and faked a smile, before she noticed the banner.

This was definately a bad idea."You... you didn't!" she said overly loudly, but recieved no response. Obviously, he didn't want to make a show of himself in public ( ... )

Said figure's identity was concealed with a golden mask that covered half his face, elegant but at the same time sharp and angular, designed after a some bird of prey - it even had a small beak extending over his nose. He was dressed rather flamboyantly even by masquerade ball standards, in a white silk shirt with a neck cloth and ribbons along the sleeves, black pants and knee-high boots. To complete the look, he had a black sash tied about his waist embroidered with gold, and all in all looked rather like a well-dressed pirate. For someone who claimed quite lazily that he'd 'throw something together', Balthier had certainly seemed to have made an effort to at least stand out.

Upon noticing Ashe descending the stairs, he bowed low as one might to royalty, but the well-practised smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth made it all too clear who was behind the mask. Straightening again, he said with amusement, "It is an honour to see the lady so enthusiastic tonight."

The annoyance Ashe had gained when talking to her father seemed to pass on to Balthier by default. Five minutes ago? She would have concidered being courteous. "Don't start," she said with annoyance, recognizing his voice and general attitudes, flicking her head sideways so as not to look at him as he spoke. Seemingly calculating something, she tutted under her breath before looking back at him, eyebrows raised, finally taking in his appearence. Even if she wanted to, there was no denial to it - he did look... a handsome, sophisticated man. "And that would be... not standing out?" she questioned, toning her temper as much as she could.

"You think this is a bit much?" Balthier asked nonchalantly, looking down at his attire for a moment. "Nothing wrong with keeping up appearances. And who would suspect someone such as yourself consorting with wanted men? Not likely." He folded his arms, as usual completely unfazed by her irritableness, glancing out across the dancefloor and at the slowly gathering guests before looking back over at Ashe. "For someone celebrating their birthday, you're horribly uptight, you know."

For what felt like the millionth time that day, Yuuki sighed, deciding not to ask her father the question of 'what exactly they were doing here'. She doubted it would go through - he was the one acting like an excited child, and she was the one dressed up in some black and red gothic dress he'd picked out for her, with a matching feathered black mask slanted slightly over her vision. She hadn't even known the Headmaster could be invited to an event like this, but apparantly it seemed like he was worthy enough of it - then again, he probably had connections with this Dalmascan family, whoever they were. Yuuki was mostly shielded from stuff like this - she'd only been dragged her for moral support.

"Headmaster," she said impatietnly. "Headmaster!" she repeated, and sighed again, as he was distracted by some people he happened to know, who had 'forgotten' to wear masks. Yuuki took this opportunity to slip away into the crowd - only suceeding into bumping into someone on her way to the buffet table.

Why the hell am I even here? was the mantra Cagalli had repeated in her mind. The answer was, obviously, 'because my father dragged me here'. As soon as she'd arrived, she'd made a beeline for the buffet table, although she was yet to actually sample any of the food, defeated by her vow to 'never eat anything you can't identify'. That stuff in the middle was probably caviar, but as for the rest of it, she was clueless ( ... )

More from distraction that anything else, Yuuki winced at the contact and immediately rubbed her shoulder. It wasn't Cagalli's fault it hurt so much - she really should, next time (if there was one), take more concideration as to when she'd offer her blood to Zero. The tired and dizziness were gone, but any slight touch made her limbs sore. "No no, it's my fault," she said apologetically, blushing slightly in embarassment. "I should have been paying more attention to what I was doing rather than looking at the food," she laughed nervously.

"It's alright," Cagalli answered, holding up a hand in a gesture of peace. Glancing back at the food, she quirked an eyebrow as she added doubtfully, "I'm not even sure half of that is edible. They could probably serve up melted candles and the people here would call it a fine delicacy." She gave an uncaring shrug, looking back to Yuuki. Feeling that she should at least do her duty as an attendee of the party, she pulled on her mask again, asking as she did so, "Are you friends with Ashelia?"

Patchouli wasn't so pleased with how this was going. At least, she didn't look very happy; but, was she ever happy? Patchouli was happiest when she was at home, reading, in the library, alone, bleeding alone. Alone, as in, with no-one else. However, since Lady Remilia Scarlet insisted... Patchouli decided that, since she would get to meet Ashe, who she'd spoken to over these "journals" a few times, and maybe it would be nice to talk to her? Of course, Remilia was really just using Patchouli as an instrument to get the guards to let her in. She was dressed in white and red, her dress rather short, wearing a red mask which barely left her eyes concealed, knowing that most anyone could recognise the lady Scarlet by the color of her eyes, but anyone could identify her by the presence of her batlike wings which protruded out of the back of her dress. Her dress was intended to, apparently, look sexy. That was something which Remilia often did at these social outings - flaunt her body, since she generally considered herself to be very pretty ( ... )

Boredom came easily to those who had lived as long as he had and sooner or later entertainment became hard to come by no matter how creative and loose you got with the meaning of the word ‘entertainment’. It was the reason why he had found himself here amongst the upper class members of society who had gathered to attend the birthday party of another spoiled brat, or so he told himself ( ... )

Patchouli had managed to break free of Remilia's grip; she fell to the floor promptly, just after Envy had run into her. She stood up eventually, finding her balance again.

"I really don't care," she said, "but apparently it's someone's birthday, or something similar. This is a little bit excessive, if you ask me." She twitched a little.

"I don't really care whether I'm here or not. She just dragged me along." She pointed at Remilia.

Envy glanced around and found himself in agreement with her. The party was definately excessive, the person whose birthday it was didn't appear to be anywhere in sight although judging from the crowds and the level of security on the place it had to be someone who was considered (at least by the upperclass socialites) to be very important. That was what he thought at any rate. "We could make it more interesting~." He remarked.
