Chapter 11:

Soon, the shouts of panic and distress from students could be heard. “Shige, you ready!?”

The younger man zipped up the bag in his hands and nodded, “Yea, let's go!”

The three of them quickly climbed down the fire escape and snuck away. For a moment, all he could think of was how glad he was that he’d fallen asleep in his jeans, because otherwise he would’ve been running around in his boxers. As quickly as they could, they ran through the streets and alleyways, away from the school where screaming could be heard.

When they finally reached the house, the three of them were out of breath, adrenaline still pumping through the veins. The third leader came running out, face serious, “Jin, were you ambushed too!?”

He nodded and tried to catch his breath, “yea, grabbed these two on the way back as well, those guys were hanging around the university too. It makes no sense how they knew where we all were…what’s the status right now?”

Pi’s frown didn’t disappear, “So far so good…none dead, several injured. Ueda was shot in the arm, Koyama’s side was grazed, and so was Massu’s leg. Other minor things, but those were the worst, they’re upstairs resting.”

Jin let out a sigh of relief, “good, that’s good…” he looked at his friend, and when the other didn’t return his gaze, he frowned, “is there anything else, Pi?”

The other shook his head, “no, but Koki’s got something you might want to hear,” he gave him a pat on the back and turned around, “I’m going to go check on Ryo-chan.”

“Yea…you go do that,” he muttered and made his way up the stairs before remembering, “Shige, take Kame to my room and answer his questions, I guess he can sleep there tonight, I’m going to go check on the others,” he muttered and continued his way up.

Shige gave a nod and led the other up the stairs after the leader. Kame’s brows furled but he obediently followed.

-------------------------

The moment he walked in, Koki leapt out of his chair and stormed towards him with an angry look on his face, “what the hell Akanishi!?”

He blinked at his angry comrade, “what?”

The other’s frown deepened, “you never told me you had a twin!”

His brows furled in frustration as he tried to keep his voice as calm as possible, “What are you talking about, Tanaka?”

“I saw you-not you, but…you, or, some kid-whatever! I thought that kid was you so I ran towards him and he pointed his gun at me!”

“What? How’s that possible?”

The other shrugged, “You tell me.”

He tilted his head slightly, “Did you say anything to him?”

“Yea, I said ‘what the hell are you doing, Akanishi?’ to the kid and he looked like he was hesitating so I took the chance to save my life, you know.” Koki gave a sigh before crossing his arms and looking back at him, “so? Any ideas?”

Jin rubbed his temples and shook his head, “None. I have no idea how that could’ve happened…go get some sleep, you’ve had a long day. I’ll go talk to Pi and see if we can get to the bottom of this doppelganger thing.”

Koki nodded and sighed, “I’ll see you in the morning then.”

“Yea…” he muttered and left the room, walking across the hallway, he passed his door as silently as possible, not wanting to disturb Kame. When he reached the second’s door, he gave a quiet knock.

-------------------------

Yamapi frowned.

Ryo didn’t take notice of him when he walked in, but then again, he hadn't taken notice to anything since that day.

He sighed and sat down beside the other on the mattress, the feeling of helplessness weighing him down, “Ryo-chan…is this all useless?” When he was replied by silence, he buried his face into his hands and let out a shaky breath, “…please answer…say something, anything…I just want you back.”

The other continued looking right past him.

Not wanting to make eye contact, he reminded as he was, curled up on the edge of the mattress, trying to think of things that made him feel better. After all, he couldn't cry, not while he was supposed to be a leader to everyone else. “…remember when we were younger? We said we were going to start a band…the three of us, and we said that Tackey and Tsubasa could be our managers…and once we got famous, we wouldn’t have to worry about money anymore.

You…you kept laughing at how me and Jin were going to get fat from eating too much, and that I’d eat ramen everyday.” He laughed softly at the memory, still refusing to remove his hands, “Tackey said it was a stupid idea, remember? He kept going on about how he was better looking and older so he’d have a better chance…and we all got into a fight. That was…really dumb.”

He thought about the bottles outside, “…I can’t believe it’s been so many years since they’ve been gone…”

-------------------------

They frowned, alarmed at the sound of intruders. They’d been using an abandoned garage as shelter for the past few weeks now, and remained undisturbed until that night. There were voices…

The five of them were huddled behind a stack of boxes in the back as the voices grew louder.

Pi frowned, “Tackey…who are they?”

The elder shook his head and shushed him, “they could be anyone. Police, criminals, normal people, kids that got dared…they could be from a gang…”

Ryo gave a huff, “should we chase them out?”

Tsubasa looked down with a strained smile, “let’s not rush in without thinking now.”

“How long’s it going to take them to leave then?”

“Patience, Bakanishi.”

The voices were approaching.

The elder pair exchanged looks before getting up quietly.

The three stared, alarmed, “Tackey? Tsubasa?”

Tackey ruffled their hair, “Calm down, we’re just going to go make sure everything’s alright.”

Tsubasa smiled, “Don’t worry, we’ll be careful.”

The other pointed at them threateningly, “make sure you stay here until we get back.” But when he saw their widened eyes, his frown softened and he let out a sigh, “how about this? Tomorrow, we’ll all go out for breakfast, alright? It’ll be my treat, I promise, so just stay here.”

The three of them nodded obediently and watched as the two loaded their guns and walked off. They could hear the strangers and the two talking, their voices moving further away until the place was flooded with silence.

-------------------------

Tackey and Tsubasa didn’t return the next morning.

The boys searched high and low in the city for the two but it was to no avail.

It wasn’t until weeks later that they heard the news from a boy on the streets. “Those two? They’re dead. Got shot a couple weeks back, got on the wrong side of…you know. Wanted them to join the gang but those two said no, probably pissed him off, so now they’re dead.”

The three of them looked at each other in shock. Ryo swallowed thickly, “…we’ve gone over this…remember?” The two nodded weakly, “right…let’s…head back and figure out what to do…” He turned to the boy, “what’s your name?”

“Ikuta Toma.”

“Come with us.”

The boy shook his head, “I’d rather stay out of this gang stuff, live a little longer, I’m no good with a gun anyways. But if you ever need info, come find me, I’ll be hanging around.”

They nodded, gave their names and left. Before they knew it, word got out that they had their own gang and everything turned chaotic after that.

-------------------------

“Don’t worry Ryo-chan, by the time you get better…all of this will be over…” he muttered softly to himself, “and when that happens, I hope you don’t remember any of this…”

There was a soft knock at the door and Jin walked in.

“Pi, something weird’s going on.”

He looked over and nodded, “Let’s talk about this tomorrow, I got a message from Toma, we’re meeting him tomorrow night at the usual place, he’ll probably be able to tell us something.” Glancing back at Ryo, he sighed and got up, “I’m going to get some shut eye while I still can.”

“Pi…”

The third patted him softly on the back, “go check on Kamenashi, hm? And make sure you get some sleep as well.”

Jin watched as his friend retreated back to his own room before turning to Ryo, “you know…we could really use your help right now.”

No response.

He sighed, “…goodnight Ryo-chan.”

Closing the door behind him, he didn’t hear the other mutter, “goodnight” back.

-------------------------

When he got back to his room, Shige had already left, leaving him alone with Kame. He walked in and sheepishly asked, “…are you alright?”

The other nodded from the bed he sat on, “I can’t believe this…”

He blinked, “Believe what?”

Kame frowned, “you, this, everything. I can’t believe you’re taking part in a gang fight-war-whatever this is.”

Jin raised a brow and tried to answer calmly to little avail, “it’s not like we had a choice, Kame. We had to-have to survive. It’s not like we wanted to shoot people or to get shot at, we didn’t want our friends to get killed-but when you’re standing there and someone’s pointing a gun at you-I don’t know about you, but I’d rather fire first and live a little longer. You probably don’t get it, do you?”

The younger man paused before dipping his head down, “No…I understand, I'm sorry, it’s just that I…I just never expected to be caught up in this. I know you didn’t mean to but still…”

He sighed and walked over, placing a hand on the other’s head like he used to do to Reio when the boy wasn't at his best, “just get some sleep for now, we’ll figure out what to do in the morning.”

“Where will you sleep?”

The first gave a shrug, “I’ll go bunk with Pi or something.”

“…will you stay here?”

He raised a brow, “why? Are you scared?”

The other nodded honestly, “Yes.”

Jin blinked and thought for a moment before pursing his lips and averting his eyes elsewhere. He crossed his arms and sat down against the wall by the mattress, “…fine then…I’ll be right here.”

Kame tried to hold back his smile, “that looks really uncomfortable.”

Trying to chase away his sudden bashfulness, he huffed, “You’re the one that’s scared. I’ll just sleep here for tonight.” When he saw that the other didn’t look convinced, he waved his hand offhandedly, “it’s fine, I’ve slept through worse situations, so hurry up and sleep or else you won’t wake up in time for breakfast tomorrow.”

“Alright then…goodnight, I’ll see you in the morning then.”

He watched as the other crawled under the covers. After awhile, he could hear Kame’s breathing even out and pulled his legs up to make himself more comfortable. “There’s no point in being scared…I wouldn’t let anything happen to you…stupid…” he muttered as he closed his eyes and allowed sleep to overtake him.

-------------------------

Pi looked back, “Hurry up Jin, the sooner we find him, the sooner we can get back.”

He huffed and stuck his hands into his pockets but picked up the pace, “Yea, yea, I know. But Toma better have a good reason for dragging both of us away…”

“Well he said it was urgent…” the third turned around and stared at him with a frown on his face, “you can’t seriously think-”

A bit away, a gun went off. Without a word, the two exchanged alarmed looks before racing off towards the sound.

-------------------------

When they arrived, there was red.

So much red…

“Toma!”
