What should we go see in Brussels?

Feb 16, 2009 16:00

We're off to play in Brussels this weekend, what should we go and see? What should we do?

I think we're planning gentle mooching, eating, drinking, more eating, and more gentle mooching. Is there anything unmissable?

We're doing Eurostar, which I'm looking forward to. Hooray for adventures.

There's the Atomium, which is quite impressive and obviously geeky.
As pink_weasel mentions, Manneken Pis should probably be on your schedule, before someone takes it down because it's either not PC or provokes pedophilia...

There's the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences which has 30 mounted Iguanondon skeletons.

Also, try and find the Jeanneke Pis.

Otherwise, chocolate obv, but also moules et frites (om nom nom).

The Belgian Comic Strip Museum/Centre Belge de la Bande Dessine is good, albeit mostly francophone: http://www.trabel.com/brussel/brussels-museums-comicstrip.htm

My schoolboy french is tres mauvais, and I didn't have a childhood reading BDs, so I undoubtedly missed a lot of the references, but there was still a lot of cool stuff there.

When I went, there was a temporary exhibition about an artist who seemed to be the Belgian equivalent of Frank Hampson of Dan Dare fame. Dead cool, especially the notes that he'd taken while on a research trip in Britain (noting down that his dinner had been "welsh rabbit" washed down with "biere anglaise ('light ale')")
