Looking forward to a day at home tomorrow sorting out my life and the weekend to come. I know I could probably do with a haircut, but realistically, I'll be shopping at Morrisons for cheap food to feed the horde. The plan is lots of cheese and pate, nice bread to be purchased in Norfolk, a wide range of fruit, + lots of veg, so I can make a big ( Read more... )

To swig as I make it? I seem to remember madeleines, or sponge fingers soaked in sherry, a layer of fruit, a layer of coostard, and if I'm feeling gross, some squirty cream, + chocolate sprinkles and hundreds and thousands.

Also custard (you can use packet, but that's probably no good for the wheat-intolerant), whipping cream, jelly (raspberry perhaps), fruit (not pineapple, which is Wrong and will make your jelly not set, as also would maggots), lady fingers (the sponge fingers, not okra), and possibly a little dark chocolate to grate on top.

I'm being disorganised (again). Should I turn up Friday night or Saturday lunchtime, and should I collect £200 anyone on the way? Is driving or training more sensible, given that it's a 4.5 hour drive to Cambridge? Have you sent me directions already? Do I need towels & bedding?

I wanna PA for my social life. Or a portable Mum.

turn up Friday night if you can cope with the drive, a beeping slag is a good idea. You could train it to Kings Lynn, which would involve changing at Peterborough I think. If you do that, let us know what time, and we'll dispatch the hounds to come and fetch you. It's about a 3 hour drive from here, but that doesn't include crossing the Penines. Directions are basically A1 to the A17, then take the A148 til you get to signs for Flitcham and Bircham (it's a left turn after a long wall), in Bircham follow signs for Burnham Market and Burnham Thorpe(you'll be in small lane Norfolk now, but it's quite well sign-posted). The house is on Walsingham Road in Burnham Thorpe, but call us if you need directions (01328 738 574).

I promise you tea, red wine, biscuits or crisps and loving care once you get to us! Bring towels too if you require.

Holiday recommendations - I went to Wales twice last year; once to Pembrokeshire and once to the north. Both were divine.

don't know anything about trifle (i'm not english after all) but as for a non-wheat pilaf, I recommend quinoa if you can get it. It's really light and different. Try it will dried apricots and pistachios. Or if you want I can send you an actual recipe.

I used quinoa, and it made great pilaf. In fact, the pilaf, and the goat's cheese and lentil salads were the great successes of the weekend.

Trifle is a recent discovery for me too, my mum hates it, so we never had it at home, so I always feel like an american when trifle is discussed... it is a wierd desert, but then I guess that I have had deserts in america which are equally bizarre (involving tomatoes and jello once).
