Summary: Reid are getting ready to fly to Dallas to prepare for the hearing.
Reid couldn’t believe the crappy selection of magazines that Wade’s Bookshop had. It’s not like he was expecting to be able to find medical journals or anything. But the fact that the best selections that he could find were I Love Cats, Gardens and Guns, and Model Airplane News was absolutely horrifying. He paid for the magazines with cash because he did not want them on his credit card records. He had hoped to find magazines that would help distract him on the flight. Distract him from the possibility that he might very well lose everything that mattered to him. And to distract him from Richie Rich. To distract him from fantasizing about why Richie Rich was doing so much for him. He didn’t know what the Hell was happening between the two of them. But something was. Something exciting and promising and terrifying. Or maybe it was all in Reid’s head. The man sometimes still seemed so tied up in knots over the boyfriend. The ungrateful boyfriend who treated him like crap. Why had Richie Rich put up with that garbage? It made no sense. The whole town was crazy. They should check out the water supply.
As Reid walked closer to Al’s Diner, he noticed two things. One: The take-out bag that Richie Rich had gotten for them definitely didn’t contain enough chili and cornbread for both of them. He hoped that Richie Rich at least had some stale peanuts on the plane. Two: Richie Rich looked heartsick. Like he was angry and sad and lost. Reid glanced in the Diner’s window. Oh, for goodness’ sake! Noah Mayer was apparently living it up and dating other men as part of his need to deal with being blind. What an idiot!
Reid asked Richie Rich if he was ready to go. Pretending that he hadn’t witnessed the scene that must be ripping the poor guy apart inside. As Reid and Richie Rich walked away from Noah and his new boyfriend, Reid thought about what a fool Noah Mayer was for throwing away a man like Luke. A man who loved so deeply and was so compassionate and generous. Who was fun and challenging and stubborn. What kind of an idiot would throw that away?
